Military Veterans Preference Points

Honorably discharged military veterans will be awarded five (5) or ten (10) additional points upon successfully passing the written exam. Candidates must provide a copy of their DD214 showing an honorable discharge (Member 4 copy) at the time of application or email a copy to jobs@savannahga.gov. To be considered for an award of Veteran preference points, please provide the copy of your DD214 (Member-4 or Service-2 copy) to the City of Savannah Office of Human Resources at the time of application, or no later than the last day of the written exam

IPMA-HR FF-EL 101 Exam

IPMA- HR offers a 71-page study guide designed to help you, as a firefighter candidate, prepare to take any of IPMA-HR’s entry-level firefighter tests. The study guide provides one 100-question practice test, offers detailed explanations and strategies for answering 25 of the answers to the practice test questions, and provides test-taking tips that may help you improve your overall test performance. The study guide covers the following components: logical and mathematical reasoning ability, reading comprehension, situational judgment, ability to learn and apply information, interests, mechanical aptitude, spatial sense and vocabulary. Applicants may purchase a study guide after submitting an application and prior to registering to take the exam at http://www.publicsafetycompass.com/study. Once you have purchased the study guide please allow at least 1-2 weeks for delivery

CITY OF SAVANNAH BACKGROUND STANDARDS

Motor Vehicle Report

Uniformed firefighting applicants must not have had:

• DUI/DWI charge with the disposition of nolo contendre, conviction, or plea within the past five (5) years; and no two in the past seven (7) years

• Driver’s license suspensions in the past three (3) years (except for one insurance cancellation) and no two or more driver’s license suspensions in the past seven (7) years.

• Three or more moving violations in the past two (2) years and no six (6) or more in the past seven (7) years

• Vehicular homicide or hit and run charge/arrest

• Fleeing or attempting to elude the police charge/arrest

Criminal Records

State criminal conviction records will be checked for applicants who have resided within the State of Georgia during the past 10 years. Nationwide criminal conviction records will be checked for applicants who have resided outside of the State of Georgia within the past 10 years or within the state of residence for applicants who have resided outside of the State of Georgia within the past 10 years.

Background Investigation

Applicants must undergo an extensive background investigation conducted by the Savannah Fire Department and the City of Savannah Office of Human Resources. All applicants are fingerprinted and Georgia Police Officer Standards (POST) and military records, if applicable, are checked. In accordance with the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council, applicants must not have any:

• Pending Criminal cases

• Convictions, nolo contendre or pleas involving sexual  offenses or Domestic Violence Act offenses

• Impersonating a police officer, perjury or false statements

• Felony convictions and nolo contendre or pleas involving felony arrests (within last 10 years)

• Serious misdemeanor convictions, nolo contendre, or pleas

Tobacco Use in the Workplace

Individuals hired as firefighters must comply with a No Use of Tobacco Agreement.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

The Savannah Fire Department has fully implemented the nationally approved Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Applicants must successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). The CPAT is a pass/fail test designed to simulate the tasks and activities a firefighter may encounter at an emergency scene. The test consists of eight (8) physical tasks that are representative of actions typically performed by firefighters. Candidates must progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner and complete the entire skills test in 10 minutes, 20 seconds or less. An instructional booklet is issued to each candidate to assist in their CPAT training. All candidates will receive an opportunity to participate in 10 practice sessions prior to their official CPAT test date. Candidates scheduled for the CPAT will receive notification from the Office of Human Resources. Each applicant must successfully complete the CPAT to be placed on the eligibility list.

Work Schedule

During the academy Firefighter Trainees work a 40-hour work week. After successful completion of the academy, you will be assigned a work schedule that consists of a 56-hour work week. Each Firefighter works one day (24 hours) and then has two days (48 hours) off. Firefighters must be able to report to work within 90 minutes of notification.

Basic Training

All firefighter trainees must successfully complete 14 –16- weeks of recruit training within the first four months of employment. During the academy Firefighter Trainees work a 40-hour work week. After successful completion of the academy.

Certification

During basic training, firefighter trainees must successfully pass comprehensive written and skills exam that are administered through the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council.

Physical Assessments

All firefighters are required to participate in physical fitness training and fitness which are administered twice a year.
