October 2020 Responses

 

SAVANNAH, GA (Friday, November 23, 2020) – During the Month of October, the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 642 incidents including 71 fires, 226 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 54 hazardous condition and excessive heat calls, 39 public service calls, 60 smoke scare calls and 192 false alarms. Of the 71 fires, 14 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of some the notable calls for service in October:

 

October 31, 2020

10:20 p.m.

Vehicle Extrication, West 48th Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. 

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a vehicle extrication at West 46th Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The person trapped inside the vehicle complained of pain in their right arm and leg.  Firefighters forced the passenger door open, removed the victim and helped load them into an ambulance.

9:27 p.m.

Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of E. Congress Street

Firefighters were dispatched to an elevator rescue. They forced the door of a stalled parking garage elevator and rescued three people from the third floor. Power to the elevator was secured and the scene was turned over to building management.

11:09 a.m.

Vehicle Extrication, 10000 Block of Abercorn Street

Savannah Fire Department units responded to a vehicle extrication. Firefighters discovered a two-car accident. One vehicle was on its side with a victim trapped inside. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and removed the windshield to rescue the victim.

11:28 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, 1200 of East 37th Street

Firefighters were dispatched to an accident with injuries. Firefighters discovered the driver of a wrecked vehicle bleeding from the forehead. They applied bandages to stop the bleeding then turned patient care over to EMS.

4:48 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, 1800 Block of East DeRenne Avenue

Firefighters were dispatched to an accident with injuries involving a vehicle that struck a tree. Firefighters found that the driver was not injured, but the driver had run over a fire hydrant and driven it into the ground. They turned off the vehicle motor and notified dispatch about the disabled hydrant. 

 

October 29, 2020

8:43 a.m.

Accident with Injury, Central Avenue and Skidaway Road

Units responded to an accident involving a car and bicycle. Firefighters discovered the bicyclist lying in the center of the road. They stabilized the victim’s spine, checked for injuries and provided patient care until EMS arrived. Firefighters helped load the victim into an ambulance and advised them that they would store the bicycle at the fire station. 

 

October 28, 2020

5:00 p.m.

Fire, 1200 Block of West Lathrop Avenue

Savannah Firefighters responded to a fire at an industrial plant. They discovered fire in a storage warehouse. Forklifts were used to move materials and extinguish the fire.

12:44 p.m.

Fire, 1900 Block of Fitzgerald Street

Units were dispatched to a structure fire. Firefighters discovered fire in a bedroom and quickly extinguished the blaze. The fire injured a teenager and displaced a family of five. The blaze was contained to an area on the floor and a section of the bed and dresser. 

 

October 28, 2020

11:14 a.m.

Rubbish Fire, 1300 Block of Largo Drive

Firefighters responding to the report of a structure fire discovered that a lawn care crew was burning leaves behind the structure. They extinguished the fire and advised the crew of the City ordinance prohibiting yard waste and trash fires. 

 

October 27, 2020

9:17 p.m.

Fire, 1800 Block of Arcadian Street

Units were dispatched to a fire at a single-story residence. Firefighters discovered a small blaze inside a bedroom. They extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure. Power to the structure had to be cut and three residents were displaced.

8:18 a.m.

Smoke Scare, 200 Block of Habersham Street

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a school. On scene they discovered that a science teacher was conducting an experiment with his class. Smoke from a chemical reaction triggered the alarm. Firefighters ventilated the structure. 

 

October 26, 2020

1:33 p.m.

Gas Leak, 500 Block of Jimmy Deloach Parkway

Units were dispatched to a gas leak inside a large commercial warehouse. They were informed that a forklift hit a propane line. Firefighters made sure the propane tanks were shut off and all occupants were sheltered in a safe place. A hazardous materials team monitored the gas levels in the air until the damaged propane line was repaired.

3:23 p.m.

Rubbish Fire, East 41st and Price streets

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an open area fire. The discovered a small pile of smoldering clothes in the middle of the street. They extinguished the fire and removed the ash and clothing fragments from the roadway. 

 

October 24, 2020

7:39 pm.

Medical Emergency, 100 Block of East Oglethorpe Avenue 

Firefighters at Station 3 were approached by a person requesting medical attention for injuries sustained in a fall. The individual’s hands and wrist were injured in a skateboarding accident. Firefighters provided patient care and called for EMS who transported the individual to an area hospital.

9:40 p.m.

Fire, 100 Block of Brandon Lane

Units were dispatched to a reported structure fire. They discovered that an electrical issue in an air conditioning unit had caused a fire. The resident extinguished the blaze prior to their arrival. Firefighters made sure the fire was completely out and cleared the smoke from the building.

 

October 23, 2020

6:41 p.m.

Gas Spill, 14000 Block of Abercorn Street

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a gas station. A Savannah Police officer informed them that a suspect in their custody had reportedly attempted to start a fire at a gas pump. The store attendant shut off the pumps which prevented the suspect from starting the fire. Firefighters made sure there were no potential fire hazards and arson investigators were notified. 

 

October 23, 2020

3:36 p.m.

Dumpster Fire, 0 Block of West Oglethorpe Avenue  

Firefighters were dispatched to a dumpster fire behind a restaurant. The burning dumpster was close to the building and the sprinkler system was activated. Firefighters extinguished the fire, shut off the sprinkler and checked for potential damage to the building. No elevated temperatures were detected. The Fire Marshal’s Office was notified. 

 

October 23, 2020

3:33 a.m.

Fire, 1000 Block of Dutchtown Road  

Firefighters responded to the report of a fire at an apartment complex. They discovered smoke and flames streaming from a back bedroom. They extinguished the fire and checked for damage and extension in the neighboring apartments. Firefighters provided first aid to a resident who suffered a panic attack.

 

October 23, 2020

1:23 a.m.

Vehicle Extrication, Dean Forest and Burgess roads

Firefighters were dispatched to an accident with injuries. They discovered a single car accident with an unresponsive victim. The roof of the vehicle was caved in. Firefighters cut the car door and a portion of the roof to extricate the victim. The scene was turned over to EMS and Savanah Police.

5:47 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, DeRenne Drive and Paulsen Street

Units dispatched to an accident with injuries discovered an unresponsive victim on the ground. Two civilians were performing CPR. Firefighters took over patient care until EMS arrived.

 

October 22, 2020

2:59 a.m.

Fire, 5400 Block of Abercorn Street  

Firefighters responding to an alarm at a high rise discovered a laundry cart on fire outside the building. Maintenance personnel informed them that the fire started inside the laundry room and he pushed the burning cart outside. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, ventilated the laundry room and made sure there were no hot spots. 

 

October 21, 2020

12:31 a.m.

Fire, Price and East Jones streets  

Savannah Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a residence. They discovered a fire in a locked courtyard. While one unit knocked down flames from outside the gates, another unit worked to gain entry. Once inside they completely extinguished the fire, which began in a large gas barbecue grill and spread to outdoor furniture. The gas was shut off at the meter.

11:00 p.m.

Open Area Fire, Benton Boulevard and Jimmy DeLoach Parkway 

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an open area fire at an intersection. They discovered a burning suitcase on the shoulder of the road and quickly extinguished it.

11:09 a.m.

Accident with Injuries, East 37th and East Broad Streets  

Units responded to an accident with injuries. They discovered a two-car accident. One victim was trapped inside. Firefighters were able to force the door open and rescue the victim.

3:14 a.m.

Fire, 400 Block of West Montgomery Cross Road 

Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire. They discovered smoke and flames coming from the back of an apartment. Two adults and four children were trapped inside a neighboring unit. One group of firefighters rescued the trapped residents while others extinguished the fire. No one was injured. 

 

October 19, 2020

6:23 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, East Bound I-16 at Mile Marker 164  

Units responding to an accident involving a car and a motorcycle discovered the motorcyclist on the ground. Firefighters provided the motorcyclist with medical care and checked the occupants of the car for injuries. The scene was turned over to Savannah Police and EMS. 

 

October 18, 2020

7:06 p.m.

Fire, 0 Block of Oxford Court

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire. Firefighters discovered smoke coming from a residence and three off duty firefighters knocking down flames in a bedroom closet with a garden hose. Responding firefighters extinguished the fire and made sure there were no hot spots. The family dog was rescued from a hiding place beneath a bed.

6:45 p.m.

Fire, 0 block of Sedona

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a residential structure. They discovered that the residents had extinguished a fire on their rear deck. Firefighters extinguished the hotspots and checked for extension.

8:33 p.m.

Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of E. Bryan Street 

Units were dispatched to an elevator rescue at a parking structure. They removed two adults and two children from a stalled elevator, cut power to the elevator and notified Parking Services.

6:40 p.m.

Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of East Congress Street

Firefighters were dispatched to an elevator rescue. They removed 11 people from a stalled elevator car.

Fire, 2100 Block of Benton Boulevard

Savannah Firefighters responded to the report of a structure fire at an apartment building. They discovered a small fire on a second-floor patio had been extinguished by the sprinkler system. Firefighters deactivated the sprinkler and removed excess water from the apartment. The Fire Marshal and apartment manager were notified.   

 

October 16, 2020

10:05 a.m.

Vehicle Extrication, I-95 N and Pooler Parkway

Units responded to the report of a vehicle accident with entrapment. They discovered two people trapped inside a vehicle that hit a guard rail. Savannah Firefighters worked with Pooler Fire to remove the car doors and rescue the victims.

1:52 p.m.

Medical Emergency, 3300 Block of Ogeechee Street

A discount store manager came to the fire station seeking assistance for an elderly customer who had fallen inside the store. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

10:14 a.m.

Oven Fire, 500 Block of E. Oglethorpe Avenue

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire at a restaurant. They discovered that a faulty pilot light caused a small explosion inside a pizza oven. The fire was out upon their arrival. Firefighters cut gas to the structure, checked for extension and ventilated the structure. 

 

October 13, 2020

12:54 a.m.

Fire, 1000 Block of East Broad Street

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of fire at a multifamily dwelling. A resident reported a burning smell on the second floor. Firefighters discovered burnt wiring, insulation and framing in the air system handlers. They cut power to the system and checked for hot spots.

 

October 12, 2020

4:40 p.m.

Gas Leak, 0 Block of Oleander Drive

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a gas leak. They discovered that a car had crashed into a gas meter. Firefighters shut off the gas at the damaged meter, monitored the gas levels in the building and stood by until the issue was mitigated.

 

October 12, 2020

3:21 p.m.

Unauthorized Burning, 1600 Block of Staley Avenue

Firefighters responded to a smoke complaint. They discovered someone burning pallets behind a business. Firefighters extinguished the fire and informed the business owner of the City policy prohibiting trash fires. The Fire Marshal was called to the scene regarding stacks of pallets stored too close to the building.

Fire, 2500 Block of Montgomery Street

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a structure. They extinguished a blaze on the exterior of the building.

Fire, 1900 Block of Louisville Road

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a fire at a landfill. Firefighters extinguished wood chips and pallets stored at the landfill.

Fire, 500 Block of West 35th Street

Savannah Fire responded to the report of a structure fire. Instead they found three vehicles burning at the rear of a repair shop. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fires. There was no extension to the structure.

2:45 a.m.

Fire, 3900 Block of Rockdale Avenue

Units responded to the report of a structure fire. They extinguished a fire at a residential structure.

 

October 10, 2020

7:00 p.m.

Elevator Rescue, East Congress and Drayton streets

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to an elevator rescue at a parking garage. They removed five people from a stalled elevator.

6:26 p.m.

Public Service, 10700 Block of Abercorn Street

Firefighters were dispatched to assist with a flooding issue at an apartment complex. They discovered sewer water backing up into the toilet and tub. Firefighters contacted the management company to mitigate the issue.

5:30 a.m.

Fire, 3700 Block of Ogeechee Road

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a restaurant. Chatham Firefighters discovered the blaze, notified 911 then extinguished it. When Savannah Fire arrived on scene they checked for interior hot spots and contacted fire investigators.

Fire, 500 Block of E. 40th Street

Savannah Firefighters responded to the report of a fire. They discovered a blaze in a shed and extinguished it.

Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of East Oglethorpe Avenue

Firefighters were dispatched to an elevator rescue at a residential structure. They rescued three people trapped in a stalled elevator. 

 

October 8, 2020

11:43 p.m.

Firefighters were dispatched to an elevator rescue at a hotel. They gained access to a stalled elevator car on the 5th floor and rescued two people.

Fire, 400 Block of West 32nd Street

Units responded to a fire at a vacant duplex and quickly extinguished the blaze.

8:48 p.m.

Smoke Scare, 600 Block of Draper Street

Units were dispatched to the report of a fire behind a church. Instead they discovered a person using a charcoal grill on an apartment balcony. Firefighters notified the resident of the City ordinance barring the use of grills on balconies and extinguished the fire. 

 

October 5, 2020

5:09 p.m.

Vehicle Extrication, I-16 and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard 

Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle accident. The car came to rest on a signal box and the driver was trapped inside. Power to the signal box was cut and firefighters used hydraulic tools to pry open the door and free the driver.

Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of Montgomery Street

Units were dispatched to an elevator rescue. They opened the doors of a stalled elevator car and rescued two people.
