Savannah Fire Rescue July Responses


SAVANNAH, GA (Thursday, August 1, 2019) – During the Month of July Savannah Fire responded to 702 incidents, including 105 fires, 1 gas rupture, 236 rescue incidents, 62 hazard calls, 38 service calls, 52 good intent calls, 204 false alarms and one lightning strike. Of the 105 July fires, 15 were structure fires, 10 were cooking fires, 2 were chimney or boiler fires, 21 were trash and dumpster fires, 16 were vehicle and mobile home fires, 4 were freight fires, 32 were woodland, brush and grass fires and 5 were outside equipment fires. Following is a list of some of the most notable incidents Savannah Fire responded to in July.


July 1, 2019

7:50 a.m.

Capital St. Apartments grill fire, 2800 Capital St.

Engine 9 responded to an open area fire call at the Capital Apartments. Firefighters discovered the wood framework of the grill in the community area on fire. They extinguished the fire and performed an overhaul of the grill framework to ensure all interior hot spots were fully extinguished. The apartment maintenance representative was notified.


July 1, 2019

8:47p.m.

Open area fire, 14030 Abercorn St.

Engine 11 responded to the report of an open area fire near the Walmart at 14030 Abercorn Street. They discovered a trash and brush fire in a large open area near the intersection of Fulton and Navajo roads. They quickly extinguished the blaze using attack lines & tank water.


July 2, 2019

7:43 p.m.

Vehicle fire, Columbus Drive & Reynolds Street

Engine 1 responded to the report of a vehicle fire. Firefighters discovered an SUV with a fully involved driver and passenger side compartment. Firefighters extinguished the blaze using a 1.75 attack line and searched for any victims inside. No one was inside the vehicle. The driver, who was severely injured in the fire, had jumped out and was being prepared for transport by EMS. A fire investigator was called to the scene due to the severity of the vehicle damage and injuries resulting from this incident.


July 4, 2019

5:11 p.m.

Structure fire, 4 Reading Court, Pooler

Engine 13 was called to assist Pooler Fire with a structure fire in Pooler’s jurisdiction.


July 4, 2019

6:02 p.m.

Open area fire, 1407 Stuyvesant St.

Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire. Engine 6, the first unit on scene, discovered a person who said they were burning unwanted clothes. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.


July 4, 2019

 9:07 p.m.

Arm chair on fire, 1804 Vassar

Engine 6 was first on scene and discovered a smoldering arm chair. The resident said the chair was ignited by fireworks. Firefighters fully extinguished the arm chair.

9:30 p.m.

Car fire, E. Bolton & Cedar streets

Savannah Fire was dispatched to a vehicle fire. Engine 8 was first to arrive on scene. Firefighters extinguished a fire beneath the car. The driver reported driving over fireworks in the street.


July 4, 2019

11:32 p.m.

Open area fire, Savannah Harbor Parkway and Grand Prize of America Avenue

Engine 3 responded to the report of an open area fire. Firefighters discovered firework mortars from the fireworks show on fire. Engine 3 extinguished the blaze with a water can.


July 5, 2019

1:48 p.m.

Vehicle fire, 16 Oxford Court

Savannah Fire was dispatched to a single vehicle crash with fire. Engine 9 was first on scene. Firefighters discovered a car with a fully involved passenger side compartment. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. No victims were inside. The fire was reportedly caused by fireworks.


July 5, 2019

4:44 p.m.

Cooking fire, 2401 Larkin Ave.

Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire. Engine 9 was first on scene. Firefighters discovered that the heating element inside the stove had broken in half and caused a fire inside the oven. The fire was out upon arrival. Firefighters turned off the oven, and made sure there was no fire or extension.

 

July 6, 2019

8:08 p.m.

Open area fire, 220 McAllister St. #202

Engine 3 was first to arrive on scene. Firefighters discovered that there had been an open area fire beside a structure. The resident had extinguished the blaze. Firefighters made sure the fire was completely out and cut power to an air conditioning unit with fire damaged wires. The residents said fireworks caused the blaze.


July 7, 2019

12:47 a.m.

Furniture Fire, 21 Daveitta Dr.

Engine 10 was first to arrive on scene. Firefighters discovered a burned carpet and bed. The fire was already out. The blaze did not extend to the structure. Firefighters checked for hot spots.


July 7, 2019

3:42 a.m.

Structure fire, 910 W. 35th Lane

Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire. The first on scene was Engine 5. Firefighters discovered a fire in the living room of a single story residence. While crews from Rescue 1 made sure no one was inside the building, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from extending beyond the living room area. One person was displaced.


July 7, 2019

6:20 p.m.

Great Dane trailer yard fire, 400 N. Lathrop Ave.

Savannah Fire responded to a trailer yard fire. Engine 4 arrived first on scene and discovered three trailers on fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. The cause is under investigation.


July 9, 2019

4:53 p.m.

Open area fire, Eagle Street at Kenneth Dunham Street

Engine 4 responded to a small fire in a park. Firefighters extinguished mulch and play equipment that was on fire.


July 10, 2019

12:32 p.m.

Structure fire, 118 Oxford Rd.

Savannah Fire units responded to the report of a structure fire. Engine 10 was first to arrive on scene. Firefighters discovered a kitchen microwave oven and cabinets on fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, removed the microwave and ventilated the structure. No one was injured or displaced.


July 13, 2019

10:08 a.m.

Vehicle extrication, 33rd & Paulsen streets

Savannah Fire responded to a vehicle extrication call. Engine 5 was first on scene. Firefighters discovered a two-vehicle accident with the driver of one vehicle trapped inside. Units removed the driver’s side door to extricate the victim. They provided patient care and contained the fluids leaking from the wrecked vehicles.


July 15, 2019

6:41 p.m.

Hilton Garden Inn gas leak, 5711 Abercorn St.

Savannah Fire Rescue was dispatched to a gas leak inside a hotel. Truck 1 was first on scene. Firefighters discovered carbon monoxide and natural gas leaking from a mechanical room. They shut down six large power vent water heaters and turned off the gas. The air quality was monitored until it reached safe levels.


July 15, 2019

7:55 p.m.

Open area fire, 322 Linwood Rd. 

Savannah Fire was dispatched to the report of an open area fire. Engine 10 arrived on scene first. Firefighters discovered a fire in the backyard. It had extended to the privacy fence at 321 Woodley Rd. A neighbor was attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. The exterior of a shed at 322 Linwood Rd. was also damaged. Firefighters extinguished quickly extinguished the blaze. No one was injured or displaced.


July 17, 2019

3:40 p.m.

Marietta Martin Aggregates open area fire, 127 Gulfstream Rd.

Savannah Fire responded to assist Port Wentworth Fire with a large open area fire. Truck 13 was the first to arrive on scene.


July 18, 2019

2:16 a.m.

Kitchen fire, 612 W. 41st St.

Engine 5 was the first to arrive on the scene of a kitchen fire. Baby bottles had been left to disinfect in a boiling pot of water. Water in the unattended pot evaporated and the plastic bottles ignited and burned the microwave above the stove. A resident sustained minor injuries while exiting the home. Firefighters extinguished the fire, provided first aid, conducted a smoke detector check and cleared the building of smoke.


July 19, 2019

10:56 p.m.

Whitaker Street Garage elevator rescue

Engine 3 was the first unit to arrive at the scene of a stalled elevator. Firefighters discovered an elevator stuck between sub floors 1 and 2. They opened the doors and removed 17 people from the stalled elevator. No one was injured.


July 20, 2019

10:09 p.m.

Structure fire, 1910 & 1906 E. 56th St.

Savannah Fire was dispatched to a blaze at a single-story residential structure. Engine 8 was first on scene. A teen had knocked over a gas can while moving a lawn mower and a hot water heater flame ignited the fumes. Two teens were at home at the time of the fire. Both escaped unharmed. Firefighters acted quickly to extinguish the fire and prevented it from spreading to the house next door. The exterior siding of the home at 1906 E. 56th Street suffered heat damage. Although none of the people residing in the affected homes were injured, the dog from 1910 E. 56th Street was overcome by smoke and died, despite firefighters’ attempts to resuscitate him. The three residents of 1910 E. 56th Street were displaced.


July 21, 2019

2:56 a.m.

Structure Fire, 1204 Damon St.

Engine 4 was the first to arrive on the scene of a reported structure fire. Firefighters discovered smoke streaming from the attic vent of a duplex. Residents of 1206 Damon Street had self-evacuated. Firefighters forced entry to vacant apartments at 1202 and 1204 Damon Street. They found that there had been an electrical fire in the attic. The fire melted a water pipe and extinguished itself. Firefighters checked for hot spots and cleared the building of smoke. Power to the structure was cut. No one was injured.


July 21, 2019

5:15 a.m.

Structure fire, 1109 E. Anderson St.

Engine 8 was the first to arrive at the scene of a structure fire in a two story home. Firefighters extinguished a blaze at the rear of the home. The fire appears to have originated in the area of a utility room and sitting area. Power to the structure was cut. The man who resides there was not home at the time. He was displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.


July 21, 2019

8:18 a.m.

Hazmat response, W. Bay Street and MLK Boulevard

Engine 4 responded to the report of a biohazard clean up. Firefighters discovered that a deer had been hit by vehicle. They used a bleach solution and aggressive pads to decontaminate the area.


July 21, 2019

11:30 p.m.

Structure fire, 304, 306 & 310 W. 37th St.

Savannah Fire Rescue was dispatched a fire at 306 W. 37th Street. The two-story structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene and the flames had spread to neighborhing properties. A residential structure at 308 W. 37th Street and First Metropolitan Baptist Church, located at 304 W. 37th Street, sustained heavy fire damage. All of the structures were vacant at the time of the fire and no one was injured. Because of the extent of the damage to 306 W. 37th St., where the fire originated, there is not enough evidence remaining to for investigators to analyze. However, based on investigative interviews and eye-witness reports, arson is not suspected at this time.


July 22, 2019

8:13 a.m.

Chatham County Commission Office suspicious package, 124 Bull St.

Savannah fire rescue responded to the report of a suspicious package. Hazardous Material Team members used Hazmat meters to scan the package and the readings did not detect any unsafe materials.


July 23, 2019

8:29 p.m.

Open area fire, 41 Rivermoor Ct.

Engine 14 responded to an open area fire and discovered a tree at the rear of a residence on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished.


July 24, 2019

5:45 p.m.

Vehicle extrication, Elba Island Rd.

Engine 9 was dispatched to assist Chatham Fire with a vehicle extrication on Elba Island Road.


July 25, 2019

9:15 a.m.

Cedar & E. 57th Streets

Firefighters responded to an outdoor gas leak, which began when a construction worker hit a gas line with a back hoe. Engine 1 was first on scene. Firefighters monitored the air in and around area structures and advised the occupants to shelter in place. Firefighters stood by until the gas company repaired the line. No one was injured.


July 25, 2019

5:13 p.m.

Public Service, 1601 Eleanor St.

Engine 6 was called to assist Savannah Police with a wellness check. Firefighters forced entry to a residence and discovered an unresponsive female.


July 26, 2019

11 a.m.

Elevator rescue, 13 E. Macon

Savannah Fire was dispatched to an elevator rescue in a private town house. Rescue 1 was first to arrive on the scene of the four-story structure. Firefighters rescued two people stuck inside the elevator on the fourth floor.

3:31 p.m.

Tractor trailer fire, Southbound I-95 at mile marker 103

Engine 13 assisted Pooler Fire with a tractor trailer fire.


July 26, 2019

9:13 p.m.

Swift water rescue, 611 E. River Street

Savannah Fire firefighters rescued an unconscious woman from the Savannah River. Safety 1 was first on scene and discovered that a woman was in the river, beneath the dock. Firefighters from Rescue 1 jumped into the water, swam underneath the Riverfront Plaza Dock and found an unconscious, 23-year-old, North Carolina woman in the murky water. Firefighters from Engine 3 used Savannah Fire’s small Marine 2 fireboat to pull the victim out of the water. They resuscitated her aboard Marine 2. The woman was alert and talking when she was transported to an area hospital by EMS.


July 27, 2019

6:35 p.m.

Structure fire, 1607 Chevy Chase Rd.

Engine 6 was first to arrive on scene. Firefighters discovered heavy smoke and flames streaming from the rear of a single story home in the Cloverdale subdivision. A fire in the kitchen quickly spread to the heavily stocked personal and household items in the kitchen and living room, causing extensive smoke and fire damage throughout the home. Fast acting firefighters were able to knock out the fire before it spread to the attic. The two adults who reside there escaped unharmed on their own. No one was injured, but both residents were displaced.

 

July 28, 2019

1:06 a.m.

Vehicle extrication, 1-95 Northbound Ramp at Airways Avenue

Engine 13 was first to arrive at the scene of a two-vehicle accident. One of the vehicles was overturned. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and extricated a female victim.


July 28, 2019

9:26 p.m.

Vehicle extraction, Intersection of Abercorn Street and Apache Avenue

Savannah fire was dispatched to a vehicle extrication. Engine 11 was first to arrive on the scene of the three-vehicle accident. The driver of one of the vehicles was trapped inside. Firefighters used a hydraulic spreader to open the driver's side door and gain access to the patient.


July 31, 2019

11:40 p.m.

Gas leak, 35th and Bull streets

A construction worker using a backhoe damaged a gas line. Bull Street was blocked off from 34th to 36th Street and residents and businesses in the area were advised to shelter in place. Savannah Fire stood by while gas company workers repaired the gas line. No one was injured.


July 31, 2019

2:36 p.m.

Georgia Port

Savannah Fire’s Technical Rescue Team participated in a multi-agency swift water search for a worker who fell off of a boat at the Georgia Port.
