June 2019 Responses

SAVANNAH, GA (Thursday, July 18, 2019) – During the Month of June, Savannah Fire responded to 679 service calls, including 80 fires, 2 incidents involving excessive heat, 228 emergency medical service and other incidents calls, 81 hazardous material calls, 35 public service calls, 48 smoke scare calls and 175 false alarms. Of the 80 fires, 21 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the structure fires and other notable calls for service:

June 1, 2019

  • Savannah Gardens, 500 Pennsylvania Ave., 11:48 a.m.

    Firefighters encountered a resident grilling on the deck of his apartment in Building 1900. He was advised that grilling on apartment decks was prohibited. The man agreed to cookout in the designated complex grilling area

June 2, 2019

  • AMC Movie Theatre, 511 Stephenson Ave., 1:41 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to investigate a carbon monoxide alarm at a movie theatre. When firefighters arrived on scene the customers and employees were already outside. A CO alarm was going off in Theatre 10. Firefighters detected a small amount of CO leaking from a tank, which had been filled by a vendor earlier that day. The theatre was closed for the day and the vendor was called to repair the tank.

  • 632 E. 35th St., 6:04 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm. The resident was outside and had no CO poisoning symptoms. However, firefighters detected high levels of gas in the home. They discovered a burner on the stove was turned on but the pilot light was not lit. They turned off the burner and ventilated the home until air quality readings were normal.

June 3, 2019 

  • 1225 Southeast 36th St., 3:13 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire. Firefighters discovered a smoldering wall on the exterior of the building. They used a water can to cool down hot spots and made sure the fire was completely out. The residents said they were having problems with electrical wiring. The landlord was notified.

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods, 318 Mall Blvd., 3:43 p.m.

    Savannah Fire responded to a sporting goods store parking lot for the report of an open area fire. They quickly extinguished the fire.

June 5, 2019

  • 6 ½ W. 61st St., 2:04 p.m.

    Savannah Fire responded to the report of a structure fire. Firefighters discovered smoldering clothes on the outside and inside of the structure. They extinguished the items with a water can and made sure the blaze had not extended to the structure. The occupant had been cooking with grease. A pot caught fire and he attempted remove the pot and put the fire out with the clothes. He was injured in the process. The occupant was transported to a local hospital for treatment and firefighters ventilated the building.

  • 28 W. 49th St., 10:03 p.m.

    Savannah Fire quickly extinguished a fire, which began after lightning struck a residence and ruptured the gas line. No one was injured, but power to the home had to be cut. Two adults were displaced as a result.

June 6, 2019

  • Frazier Homes, 502 Emerald Dr., 2:58 p.m.

    Savannah Fire units were dispatched to a structure fire at the Frazier Homes Complex. Firefighters used a water can to extinguish curtains that were on fire inside an apartment.

  • 10436 Gray Fox Way, 4:09 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire. It appeared as if lighting struck the garage roof, damaged electrical wiring and caused the fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the attic, preventing it from extending into other sections of the home. However, power had to be cut and the house, garage and its contents sustained severe water damage. The resident, who was not home at the time of the fire, was displaced.

June 7, 2019

  • 639 w. 44th St., 7:23 a.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at a boarded up structure. They forced entry and quickly extinguished the fire. The cause is under investigation.

  • E. Victory Dr. & Paulsen St., 9:58 a.m.

    Firefighters responded to a three-car accident. One driver was entrapped. Firefighters gained access to the victim through the vehicle’s rear window and provided emergency care. Firefighters then performed an extrication through the passenger side door.

  • 42 Dunnoman Dr., 4:22 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire, which was out upon their arrival. Firefighters discovered that the occupant had been cooking with grease, which caught fire and spread to the microwave and cabinet above. There was minor damage to the structure, but the resident was injured while attempting to extinguish the grease fire with water. Firefighters unplugged the appliances, cleared the building of smoke and made sure there were no hot spots.

June 11, 2019

  • 55 Dunnoman Dr., 3:18 p.m.

    Savannah Fire responded to the report of a kitchen fire. The blaze was out when firefighters arrived. Fire from a pot on the stove damaged the microwave and cabinets above it. A teenager left a pot on the stove unattended. Her brother put the fire out. Firefighters checked for extension and made sure there were no hot spots. No one was injured or displaced.

  • Travel Inn Hotel, 8 W. Gateway Blvd., 9:01 p.m.

    Savannah Fire worked with Chatham Fire to extinguish a blaze in a hotel, which was slated for demolition. The cause of the fire is likely lightning.

June 15, 2019

  • 1606 Brownville Ct., 1:13 a.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire in the area of 1607 Burroughs St. Firefighters discovered a fully engulfed two-story home at 1606 Brownville Ct. Neighbors reported the fire. The two people who reside there were not at home. Firefighters acted quickly to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the adjacent houses. No one was injured, but the two residents of 1606 Brownville Ct. were displaced

June 19, 2019

  • Northbound I-51 at eastbound I-16, 4:13 p.m.

    Firefighters were dispatched to a 4-vehicle accident. One driver was entrapped. They used extrication tools to remove the victim from the wreckage. Firefighters also provided emergency medical care and helped the victim’s family retrieve medication and groceries from the vehicle.

June 22, 2019

  • 507 W. 36th St., 12:26 a.m.

    Savannah Fire responded to a structure fire at the rear of a home. They acted quickly to force the back porch door open and extinguish the blaze in a crawl space. No one was injured or displaced. 

  • Royal Oaks Apartments, 301 Noble Oaks Dr., 1:33 p.m.

    Savannah Fire Rescue was dispatched to an apartment fire in Building 2600. Firefighters discovered heavy smoke coming from apartment 2601 and 2602. There was a fire in the bathroom wall between the two apartments. The fire was quickly extinguished. The cause appeared to be electrical. Power to the units was cut.

  • 8th Street & Marsh Creek Cove on Tybee Island, 5:17 p.m.

    Firefighters were called to assist the Tybee Fire Department with a structure fire. Savannah Firefighters supplied water to units and extinguished a blaze on the third floor.

June 23, 2019

  • Railway bridge at E. Gwinnett and East Broad streets, 11 a.m.

    Firefighters responded to a fire at the CSX railway bridge located east of East Broad and Gwinnett streets. Firefighters extinguished a small fire on top of the bridge. CSX was called to inspect the bridge before Gwinnett Street was reopened to traffic. No hazards were found.

  • 406 San Anton Dr., 7:11 p.m.

    Firefighters were called to lift a woman with mobility issues.

June 24, 2019

  • Burger King, 14 W. Derenne, 12:51 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was called to a fire at a fast food restaurant. A grease fire on the stove had been extinguished by the hood system above the kitchen stove. However, grease build up within the hood continued to cause smoke and there were visible flames behind the hood vents. Firefighters cut power to the building and extinguished the blaze.

  • Bells Landing Boat Ramp at 12450 Apache Ave., 1:34 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a boat ramp on Hoover Creek, where a man in the water had gone missing. Savannah Fire dive and boat crews searched the water for an hour.

June 25, 2019

  • Bells Landing Boat Ramp at 12450 Apache Ave, 8:16 a.m.

    Firefighters were dispatched to a boat ramp on Hoover Creek to remove the body of the swimmer that went missing the day before. The man’s body had drifted down river and resurfaced

  • Abercorn and E. 40th streets, 11:52 a.m.

    Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a vehicle fire at Abercorn and E. 40th streets. They discovered a train on fire and quickly extinguished the engine compartment. Because the train was over 2,600 feet long, several intersections were blocked until the fire damaged engine could be moved.

  • International Paper, 1202 W. Lathrop Ave., 3:50 p.m.

    Units were dispatched to a fire at International Paper. Firefighters discovered smoke coming from a 3-story metal building. Paper material had built up in the pipe work of a powered vent and caught fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and all hot spots.

  • Burger King, 7923 White Bluff Rd., 7 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fast food restaurant to investigate a carbon monoxide alarm. The restaurant manager had cleared everyone from the building when firefighters arrived. Firefighters discovered elevated CO levels in the air and cut power to a leaking drink machine tank. They ventilated the structure and repair crews were called to fix the leak.

June 26, 2019

  • 774 E. Waldburg, 10:56 a.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a gas leak. A contractor hit a high pressure gas line while working in the Park Avenue Lane. Firefighters notified neighbors to shelter in place while the gas company mitigated the issue.

June 27, 2019

  • 509 E. 34th St., 3:33 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire. No one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported by a passerby. Firefighters entered the building and extinguished the blaze, which began in the attic. Two people were displaced.

  • 650 W. 41st St., 5:48 p.m.

    A backyard refrigerator caught on fire. The blaze damaged the exterior of the home and melted portions of the vinyl siding at the neighboring home. No one was injured or displaced

  • I-95 & Jimmy DeLoach Parkway, 6:43 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident and extricated one person from the wreckage. Firefighters used hydraulic spreaders to remove the driver's side door and gain access to the victim.

  • 633 W. 38th, 8:57 p.m.

    Savannah Fire responded to a kitchen fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Ho one was injured, but power to the home had to be cut. Three residents were displaced.

June 28, 2019

  • Northbound Truman Parkway at the Delesseps Avenue Exit, 6:54 a.m.

    Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle accident and fire. Firefighters discovered a heavily engulfed U-Haul truck. All occupants were out of the vehicle, which had crashed through the east side rail and into the Delesseps exit sign, before catching on fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

  • Savannah Summit Apartments, 135 Hampstead Ave., 4:22 p.m.

    Savannah Fire responded to a fire alarm activation at a high rise apartment. A kitchen fire in a ninth floor apartment was out when firefighters arrived on scene. Firefighters made sure the stove and surrounding cabinets were fully extinguished. They ventilated the apartment and provided first aid to the resident, who complained of shortness of breath.

  • 1313 Staley Ave., 8:01 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was dispatched to a structure fire in a salvage yard trailer. When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered fires in the trailer and in the nearby woods. They quickly extinguished the fires.

  • Extended Stay America, 5511 Abercorn St., 10:09 p.m.

    Savannah Fire was called to an open area fire at the back of a hotel. Firefighters discovered that a fire in mulch at the back of the building had spread to a back wall. Firefighters used water cans to extinguish the blaze and checked for hot spots. No one was injured of displaced.

June 30, 2019

  • 103 Willow Rd., 8:22 p.m.

    Savannah Fire units responded to the report of a structure fire. Firefighters discovered that a small electrical fire had occurred, but was out upon their arrival. They checked for hot spots, turned off the electrical breakers and advised the homeowner to call a qualified electrician.
