SFD warns of the danger of children in locked cars
SAVANNAH – SFD requests parents, caregivers, and the community to take immediate action if they see children locked alone in a vehicle.
According to our incident reports, SFD has responded to 13 incidents involving children left in locked vehicles in 2024 to date. This compared to four incidents in the last three months of 2023.
Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle poses a severe risk. Even on a moderately warm day, the interior of a locked car can reach high temperatures within minutes.
We ask parents to take the following precautions:
- Never leave a child alone: Whether you’re out running errands or step away momentarily.
- Place visual reminders: Place personal items you’ll need to retrieve in the backseat with your child. Keep your child’s belongings in the front seat as a visual reminder.
- Take Action: If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately. Emergency personnel are trained to respond swiftly.
