November 2020 Responses
During the Month of November, the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 667 incidents including 71 fires, 241 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 65 hazardous condition & excessive heat calls, 37 public service calls, 47 smoke scare calls and 205 false alarms. Of the 71 fires, 15 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in November:
November 30, 2020
4:07 a.m.
Fire, West 32nd Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
Units were dispatched to the report of a structure fire at they discovered smoke coming from a vacant gas station building. Firefighters forced entry to the structure and extinguished a small fire inside. It appeared as if someone had gained entry through the rear of the building and started a fire for warmth. The blaze was extinguished and a fire investigator was notified.

Smoke Removal, 1700 Block of Arcadian Street
Firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire. On scene they discovered a resident on the porch of a smoke-filled house. The resident started a fire in the fireplace but failed to open the flue. Firefighters made sure the fireplace fire had not extended to the structure and ventilated the building.

Overheated Motor, 1400 Block of East Henry Street
The Savannah Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation. The resident told them that the dryer was smoking. Firefighters discovered smoke coming from the rear of the dryer. Firefighters removed the dryer from the home, ventilated the structure and checked the vent line in the wall for elevated heat levels. There were no hot spots.

Medical Emergency, 0 Block of West Liberty Street
Firefighters were dispatched to assist an unresponsive person on the ground. The individual had a pulse but was struggling to breathe. Firefighters administered oxygen and provided patient care until EMS arrived. EMS took over patient care in the back of the ambulance and a firefighter drove them to the hospital. Firefighters provided care to the patient’s spouse who suffered abrasions during the incident.

Vehicle Fire, 200 Block of West 35th Street
Units responded to the report of a vehicle on fire near a structure. Firefighters discovered the passenger compartment of a truck on fire in the backyard of a residence. The vehicle was parked near a fence. The fire in the truck was extending onto a nearby car. Firefighters extinguished both vehicles and made sure there was no extension to the fence. The scene was turned over to police and fire investigators were notified.

Medical Emergency, 7100 Block of 10th Place
Firefighters responded to the report of an unresponsive person at a motel. EMS was already on scene and asked for assistance with CPR while they prepared to administer NARCAN. The patient ultimately regained consciousness.

Vehicle Extrication, Eisenhower and Hodgson Memorial drive
Firefighters responded to a fire at an industrial plant. They discovered a fire in a warehouse. While firefighters attacked the fire, forklifts were used to move material out of their way. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and made sure there were no remaining hot spots.

Fire, 200 Block of Millen Street
The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a fire inside a vacant structure that was under renovation. They found heavy smoke streaming from the building. Firefighters forced entry through the front door, but their path to the fire at the rear of the structure was impeded because the hallway floorboards had been removed. They were able to extinguish the fire after cutting a vent in the roof.

Fire, 1300 Block of East 54th Street
Firefighters were called to extinguish a fire at a single-story structure. They discovered smoke coming from the front of the building and quickly extinguished the fire inside.

Rubbish Fire, Ogeechee Road and Chatham Parkway
Firefighters were dispatched to a reported open area fire. They discovered smoke coming from beneath a bridge on Ogeechee Road. They discovered a small fire in a homeless camp. The fire did not reach the structural components of the bridge. As firefighters extinguished the items on fire in the camp, an individual approached them and reported they were his belongings. The individual said the fire must have spread accidentally while he was away.

Carbon Monoxide Incident, 600 Block of Cape Street
Units were dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm at a housing facility. They discovered elevated gas levels in a kitchen. After firefighters secured the gas at the stove and ventilated the building, the meter readings were normal. The resident was instructed to contact the Housing Authority for repairs before attempting to use the stove.

Outside Storage Fire, 1900 Block of East Victory Drive
Units were dispatched to an open area fire at a grocery store. They found a smoldering shopping cart bin and charred paper signs. Firefighters made sure the fire was completely out and the surfaces were cool before turning the scene over to the store manager.

Fire, 1600 Block of New Castle Street
The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a fire. Firefighters discovered smoke and flames coming from a residential building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Power to the structure was cut.

Gas Leak, 100 Block of Mulberry Boulevard
Firefighters responded to a gas leak at a hotel. They discovered that a small explosion occurred inside and oven due to a gas leak. The unit was unplugged and the gas was shut off. Firefighters determined that the gas levels throughout the building were normal. They instructed the hotel staff to have the appliance professionally serviced.

Vehicle Extrication, West 37th and Barnard streets
Firefighters were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash with the occupants of one vehicle trapped inside. Firefighters assessed the condition of the occupants and extricated them from the vehicle. The two victims were transported to an area hospital by EMS.

4:40 p.m.
Medical Emergency, East Victory Drive and Skidaway Road
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an unresponsive person on a bus. They discovered an individual passed out on a back seat. After making contact, the individual woke up and was obviously intoxicated. The individual became combative and police were called to the scene. The individual ultimately got off the bus.

Gas leak, 100 Block of East Broad Street
Savannah Fire units responded to a gas leak inside a medical clinic. Firefighters located a leaky air handler on the roof. Gas and power to the unit was cut and firefighters stood by until the issue was mitigated.

Vehicle Extrication, Ogeechee Road and West Victory Drive
Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle accident with injuries. On scene they found a two-vehicle accident with one motorist trapped inside their vehicle. Some firefighters assisted EMS with patient care while others pried open the door and extricated the victim.

Fire, 0 Block of Altman Circle
Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire. Instead, they found smoldering paper and slight charring inside a home. The resident said there had been a domestic dispute the night before and a relative had threatened to set fire to the house. No one was injured. The fire investigator and police were notified.

Smoke Removal, 0 Block of Peachtree Drive
Units responded to a fire alarm and found light smoke in a hotel hallway. They determined that one of the residents burned a corn dog in the microwave, which generated enough smoke to trigger the alarm. Firefighters cleared the smoke from the building.

Vehicle Extrication, East Henry and McCormick streets
Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle accident. They discovered an individual and a dog trapped in the back of a wrecked vehicle. One door was blocked by a utility pole and the other was damaged during the collision. Firefighters provided patient care and freed the victims from the car.

Transport Vehicle Fire, 3600 Block of Ogeechee Rd
Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle fire. They found a dump truck with smoke emanating from its cargo area. Logs in the back of the dump truck were on fire. The driver said work crews had cut the logs with chainsaws before loading them into his truck and some smoldering occurred in the process. Firefighters extinguished the fire.

Trash Fire, Fahm Street and West Oglethorpe Avenue
Firefighters responded to the report of a vehicle fire. They discovered a garbage truck driver dumping a burning load of garbage onto the street. The driver said he was collecting trash and noticed that the contents of his garbage truck were on fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and checked the vehicle to make sure it was not damaged by the flames.

Accident with Injuries, 1500 Block of Eleanor Street
Units responding to a vehicle accident discovered that a motorist struck parked car and flipped their vehicle. Firefighters provided first aid until EMS arrived on scene.

Public Service, 1700 Block of Whitaker Street
Firefighters were dispatched to a public service call. They discovered an individual had had stepped through a hole on the second floor of a building. One leg went through the floor and was trapped at the thigh. Firefighters removed floor panels and freed the victim’s leg. The scene was turned over to EMS.

Cooking Fire, 11000 Block of Apache Avenue
Firefighters were dispatched to report of a fire. They discovered heavy smoke coming from pots on the kitchen stove. The pots were removed, the building was ventilated, and firefighters made sure the blaze had not spread to the structure.

Rubbish Fire, 1300 Block of Augusta Avenue
Units were dispatched to the report of a structure fire. They discovered a small pile of trash burning inside a vacant structure. They extinguished the burning rubbish and ventilated the structure.

Elevator Rescue, 400 Block of West Bay Street
Firefighters responded to an elevator rescue call. They discovered eight people trapped inside a stalled hotel elevator. The only access points were on the first and sixth floors. Units set up a rope system and lowered two firefighters 25 feet down to the elevator car. They helped the eight victims out of the elevator roof hatch, placed them in harnesses and lifted them up to safety on the sixth floor.

Fire, 1000 Block of Cope Street
Units were dispatched to a residential fire. They discovered that an air handler caught fire in the attic but was out upon their arrival. Firefighters ventilated the structure and cut power to the structure.

Odor Removal, 100 Block of Bordeaux Lane
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a gas leak at a residence. The homeowner said the odor made it difficult for them to breathe. Firefighters found no evidence of a gas leak and called for a Hazmat Team. The Hazmat Unit used meters to monitor the gas levels in the air. No hazardous conditions were found, but a strange odor was detected. Upon further investigation firefighters determined the smell was caused by bleach the homeowner had been using while cleaning. Firefighters ventilated the structure.

Extrication, 5000 Block of Lafitte Drive
Units were dispatched to the report of a person stuck on a roof. Firefighters discovered an individual had fallen off the roof of a single-story residence. Their legs became entangled in a ladder during the fall. Firefighters provided patient care and removed several rungs from the ladder to free the victim’s legs. The victim was transported to a local hospital by EMS.

Elevator Rescue, 700 Block of Wheaton Street
The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to an elevator rescue at an office building. They discovered two people trapped inside an elevator that stalled on the fourth floor. Firefighters used an attic ladder to rescue the victims through the elevator roof hatch.

Fire, 10700 Block of Abercorn Street
Units were dispatched to the report of a fire. They discovered smoke and flames streaming from an apartment building. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which appears to have originated in the attic. The fire was contained to one unit, but five others sustained smoke and water damage. Only three of the six units were occupied. Residents of all three units were displaced. No one was physically injured by the fire, but several firefighters were stung by yellow jackets while extinguishing the blaze.

Vehicle Fire, 100 Block of East Bryan Street
Units were dispatched to a vehicle fire inside a parking garage. They discovered a burning car on the third floor. Flames were emanating from beneath the hood. Firefighters extinguished the fire and made sure there was no extension to the structure.

Fire, 1200 Block of Habersham Street
Units were dispatched to a fire at a convenience store. They discovered smoldering fire around a window and extinguished the blaze before it spread to the attic. It appeared as if the fire began in an area where the wooden windowsill was rotted and littered by cigarette butts.

Medical Emergency, 1000 Block of Victory Drive
Firefighters responded to the report of a vehicle accident. They discovered an unresponsive person behind the wheel of a vehicle that had veered off the road. The driver had a weak pulse. Firefighters assessed the patient’s condition and determined they suffered cardiac arrest from an apparent overdose. Firefighters administered NARCAN and imitated CPR. The victim ultimately regained a pulse and began breathing independently.

Rubbish Fire, City Market
The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to an open area fire in City Market. Firefighters discovered that someone had set fire to a decorative hay bale outside a business. Store employees extinguished the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival. Firefighters made sure the blaze was completely out.

Firefighters were dispatched to report of a trash compactor truck on fire. They discovered heavy flames coming from the passenger compartment. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

Firefighters responded to the report of a fire at a residence. They discovered light smoke and flames on the exterior of the house near a pool pump. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and made sure there was no extension to the interior of the building.

Units were dispatched to the report of a house fire. They discovered a resident with burned hands in the backyard and an extinguished kitchen fire inside. Firefighters provided patient care and made sure the fire in the kitchen cabinets and microwave was completely out.

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm in a housing facility. Units found elevated carbon monoxide levels in a second-floor unit. Gas to the unit was cut and the building was ventilated until the meter readings were normal.

Firefighters were dispatched to assist an individual whose hand was stuck under the hood of a car. Firefighters extricated the palm of the victim’s hand from the hood hinge by cutting the hinge spring with a grinder saw.

Units responding to the report of a house fire discovered that the resident had used a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire in the bedroom. The fire was started by a space heater. Firefighters made sure the fire was completely out and ventilated the structure.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire and biohazard call. They discovered human waste and evidence of a small fire behind a commercial structure. Firefighters sanitized the area and notified the fire investigator.
