Renewable Energy

  1. What Is Renewable Energy?

Solar 1

Renewable energy comes from natural sources that replenish themselves—like sunlight, wind, water, and geothermal heat. Unlike fossil fuels, which release harmful emissions and deplete finite resources, renewables offer a cleaner, more sustainable way to power our lives.

Why It Matters:

Reduces greenhouse gas emissions and combats climate change

Improves air and water quality, leading to healthier communities

Creates local jobs in installation, maintenance, and innovation

Strengthens energy independence by relying on local resources

Lowers long-term energy costs for cities, businesses, and residents

Savannah’s Role

The City of Savannah is actively investing in renewable energy to meet its sustainability goals. Through partnerships, like our collaboration with Cherry Street Energy, we’re transforming how our city is powered—building a cleaner, more resilient future for all.

Cherry Street Energy Solar Project

The City of Savannah is proud to partner with Cherry Street Energy to bring clean, reliable solar power to municipal buildings across our community. This ambitious initiative supports our 100% Savannah goal: transitioning all city electricity use to safe, renewable sources by 2035.

Since launching in March 2023, the city’s solar initiative has brought clean energy to 27 municipal buildings.

Phase 1 began with installations at 15 sites, focusing on reducing emissions, lowering utility costs, and upgrading infrastructure. It also emphasized strong participation from diverse and local contractors.

Phase 2, which started in November 2024 and was successfully completed in April 2025, expanded solar capacity to 12 additional buildings—boosting energy independence and long-term savings.

Today, facilities like fire stations, community centers, and water treatment plants are partially powered by the sun, demonstrating the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
