City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at ditch at 12328 Largo Drive, Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. The spill was the result of a grease blockage in an 8-inch diameter gravity sewer main and caused surcharge in private sewer lateral that had its cleanout cap removed. The total volume discharged was 385 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 2:58 p.m. and the spill was corrected at 4:15 p.m. The blockage was cleared and the mix of contaminated and drainage water was pumped from the canal and back into the sewer collection system. The spill was contained The ditch was flushed and lime was placed on the affected area. Sampling will be done. Spill notifications were put at the spill site and Wilshire Canal at White Bluff.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
