City Invites Residents to Waterfront Fourth of July Celebrations
Free street parking will be offered downtown; City Hall illuminated
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah invites the community to the Independence Day Waterfront Celebrations this weekend to enjoy a live professional firework show and a new lighting illumination of City Hall.
The River Street Independence Day Celebration will feature the U.S. Army’s Third Infantry Division Brass Band and Rock Band on Rousaksi Riverfront plaza at 7:30 p.m. A professional 20-minute fireworks show will be launched at 9:30 p.m. from a barge in the Savannah River and choregraphed to a patriotic soundtrack played from various locations. Both shows are free and open to all.
As a reminder, there is no alcohol service allowed in public areas. One alcohol beverage per person in a plastic cup is allowed within the To-Go Cup Zone—which runs north to south from River Street to East Taylor and west to east from MLK Blvd. to East Broad.
Chairs and/or blankets are allowed on River Street during the fireworks celebration. The following items are prohibited: coolers, multiple cups, glass, cans, exotic animals, personal fireworks, bands, snaps and smoke bombs, skateboards, bicycles, and disruptive behavior.
Drivers should note that all ramps to River Street will close to vehicular traffic at 7 p.m. and will remain closed until after the professional fireworks show. Savannah Police Department will determine when the ramps are safe to reopen based on pedestrian traffic exiting the area.
Cars parked in the parking lots along River Street before 6 p.m. will need to remain there until SPD reopens River Street. The City will offer free parking at metered spaces on Friday. City parking garages will be open for a flat rate of $20.
The exterior lighting of City Hall has been upgraded with 21 LED lights and color integration technology. Beginning on Thursday, July 3, City Hall will be illuminated in red, white, and blue to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.
The City urges residents to practice firework safety during the weekend. Per City and State law, fireworks are allowed to be discharged between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 3 and Friday July 4. All fireworks must be handled by individuals 18 years and older.
Fireworks are not permitted on the right-of-way of a public road, highway, or railroad. They are not permitted in any park, historic site, recreational site, or other property owned by the State or City unless permitted by a controlling agency.
Celebratory gunfire is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous.
City facilities and administrative offices and facilities will be closed on Friday, July 4. Emergency services will remain open and operational. The Emergency Operation Center will be activated on Friday to ensure public safety through the day’s celebrations.
As previously noted, sanitation services will be affected by the closures. Please visit savannahga.gov/sanitation for more details.
