City, Partners to Break Ground on New Affordable Housing Units at 916 MLK Blvd.

SAVANNAH – City of Savannah officials, alongside community housing partners, will gather on Thursday, Feb. 6 to break ground on the construction of 16 affordable two-bedroom apartments at 916 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

City leaders will be joined by representatives from the Community Housing Services Agency (CHSA), CHSA Development, Chatham County/City of Savannah Land Bank Authority (LBA), and Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless (CSAH) to celebrate the beginning of the project.

“This groundbreaking represents a significant step forward in the City of Savannah's commitment to creating affordable housing solutions for those who need them the most,” Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson, II said. "By working together, we’re not only providing housing, but also giving families the stability they need to thrive.”

The new affordable housing units are one of five major construction projects in various phases of development under the Housing Savannah Action Plan. Once complete, the apartments will be home to small families exiting homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless due to rising housing costs in the neighborhood and Savannah.

Resident amenities are also expected to benefit existing neighborhood residents. This development is the result of collaborative efforts between public and private organizations over the past two years.

About Housing Savannah Action Plan

Mayor Van R. Johnson, II, established the Housing Savannah Task Force in August 2020, appointing Brynn Grant, President & CEO, United Way of the Coastal Empire and Israel G. Small, retired Savannah Assistant City Manager and longtime housing advocate as Co-Chairs.  The Task Force consisted of nearly 40 members including one appointee by each Alderperson.   City staff provided technical assistance and support to the Task Force. A 10-Year Housing Savannah Action Plan was adopted by City Council in 2021. In 2022, the action plan was launched with a $7 million City investment in the Savannah Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF).
