The City of Savannah is looking forward to hosting hundreds of local young people for the upcoming Youth & Civic Engagement event this Saturday, Feb. 8, 8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the Temple of Glory Eden Room. Due to a scheduling conflict, Ambassador Andrew Young will be unable to attend. The City is pleased to welcome State Representative Calvin Smyre as the event’s speaker.
Calvin Smyre is one of the longest serving legislators in the state general assembly and was elected in 1974. He was appointed assistant floor leader in the 1983 and 1987 legislative session, making him the first African American leader of the House since Reconstruction.
