For Immediate Release
Date: January 28, 2014
A strong winter storm is expected to impact our area beginning tonight into Wednesday, Jan. 29 with significant accumulations of ice and snow. Residents are urged to avoid hazardous road conditions and prepare for potential power outages during this severe weather event.
City offices and programs will be closed to the public on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Recorder's Court will be closed Wednesday, canceling all dockets for the day.
Savannah Public Works and Water Resources have identified critical workforce and have pre-loaded sand onto trucks to be spread should reports of icy road conditions be received.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services is increasing staffing and strategically placing fire apparatus in remote locations that could be impacted should we experience freezing on key roads and bridges. Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police have increased the number of patrol personnel available to respond through temporary reassignment of officers.
Residents of Savannah can dial 311 to report ice on roads as well as fallen trees or other public damage. If a resident witnesses a situation that poses a threat to life safety, such as a downed power line, they should immediately call 911 and avoid the area.
Crews will remain on duty to clear fallen tree limbs and debris, and maintain overall regular operations of City infrastructure. Conditions can still be extremely hazardous on the roadways.
The City asks everyone to avoid driving if at all possible during this weather event. Residents will be safest sheltering in their homes. The City will post any informational updates related to City services online and distribute through all local media outlets.
