Eateries to promote social distancing, SPD to increase enforcement

SAVANNAH, GA (May 21, 2020) — As Savannah’s economy reopens, the City of Savannah is encouraging businesses, especially restaurants providing dine-in service, to do so safely.

The Savannah Police Department’s Alcohol Beverage Compliance (ABC) Unit will increase patrols this weekend to help enforce the social distancing guidelines required by Governor Brian Kemp’s executive order.

Business owners should manage crowds as best they can, but individuals are ultimately responsible for preventing big groups in or outside of businesses, according to the governor’s order.

Restaurants are encouraged to promote social distancing as customers are waiting to enter. Businesses can place temporary markings spaced six feet apart on city sidewalks leading into their facility. These guidelines shouldn’t extend beyond the business’ property lines. Eateries are also encouraged to use digital reservation apps to allow customers to wait in line remotely or wait in public areas where they can spread out.

Restarting our local economy while protecting the health of employees and customers is the ultimate goal of these guidelines and their enforcement.
