Public Invited to Provide Input on Brownfield Assessment Project

SAVANNAH, GA (June 3, 2019) — The City of Savannah is inviting residents to participate in a community-wide Brownfield Assessment project meeting on June 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the Habitat for Humanity located on 701 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

In 2018, the City of Savannah was selected by the Environmental Protection Agency to receive a $300,000 Brownfield Assessment Grant. The City invites residents to come learn how this funding can help the community and provide input on site assessment and redevelopment needs.

A brownfield is defined as property in which expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

The City intends to focus on inactive, blighted properties that may be along the MLK/Montgomery corridor between Bay Street and 52nd Street, or within a few blocks east and west of the corridor.

“Our team has worked very hard during the application process and we are very excited to accept this EPA grant,” said Director of Sustainability, Nick Deffley. “This funding has the potential to not only remediate brownfields but to revitalize neighborhoods in line with the Savannah Forward Strategic Plan.”

After public meetings and further input, a proposal will be drafted by City staff to present to City Council determining which properties will receive funding from the Brownfield Clean Up Grant.
