For Immediate Release

City Crews Respond to Minor Sewage Spill

SAVANNAH, GA (June 2, 2019) — City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 10:45 a.m. June 1, at 1499 Grove Point Rd. An estimated 7,005 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 11:00 a.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to a station failure caused by a system surcharge, further causing 3 manholes to overflow. The City’s sewer maintenance staff started operation of the station and placed sand bags at the canal to contain sewage from further entering the water. Staff further mitigated the spill site and pumped water mix out of the ditch to the City Collection System.

Spill notifications were placed at the spill site and at Lotts Island / HAAF – Forest River. All agencies were notified as required by state guidelines.
