Demolition of Blighted Property Set
SAVANNAH, GA (March 11, 2019) — The City of Savannah next week will demolish a home that has sat chronically blighted for years on Savannah’s westside. Media is invited to the 9 a.m. March 19 demolition and news conference at 226 Cumming Street.
The property has been blighted, cited for code violations and abandoned dating back to 2004. The City helped change State law in 2017 to give municipalities the power of eminent domain to acquire chronically blighted properties for fair market appraised value when approved by Superior Court. The property on Cumming Street will be the first to utilize this new eminent domain law.
The City has begun the process to acquire, demolish and construct up to eight new single-family homes on Cumming Street that will be sold to modest-wage first-time homebuyers.
