City Crews Respond to Minor Sewage Spill

SAVANNAH, GA (February 28, 2019) — City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 8:30 a.m. February 25, at Old Jones Field approximately 190 feet northeast of property at 128 Pounder Street. An estimated 425 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 9:55 a.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to an overflowing manhole caused by grease blockage in the gravity sewer main. The City’s sewer maintenance staff removed grease blockage and set-up by-pass pumps to remove contaminated storm / sewer mix and pump into City Sewer Collection system.

Spill notifications were placed at the spill site, at Kayton Canal at Normandy Street and at East President Street Extension / Kayton Canal. All agencies were notified as required by state guidelines.
