City Installing Historic Markers for Southside Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (February 20, 2019) — Members of Savannah City Council and City partners will celebrate the upcoming installation of four markers recognizing the history of African-Americans who helped settle the White Bluff and Coffee Bluff areas in the 19th century on Friday, February 22.

The celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m., at the Crusader Center in Coffee Bluff, and will include representatives from the Crusaders Club, Savannah State University, and City Council.

On February 14, City Council approved the Crusader Club’s petition to install four historic markers on public property in the White Bluff and Coffee Bluff areas. The area was settled by freed slaves from St. Catherines, Ossabaw, and Sapelo islands.

Each marker is located at a historic point of access to the water, and celebrates the interrelationship of these early residents with the water, which was integral to their survival and allowed the community to thrive.

The unveiling of the historical markers is being celebrated as part of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival, of which the City of Savannah is a major sponsor.

Who: District 6 Alderman Tony Thomas, City staff, members of Crusader Club, SSU representatives

What: Historical Markers Dedication
