City Crews Respond to Two Minor Sewage Spills

SAVANNAH, GA (February 1, 2019) — City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 2:05 p.m. January 31, at 10530 Abercorn St. An estimated 250 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 2:30 p.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to an overflowing manhole caused by grease blockage in the gravity sewer main. The City’s sewer maintenance staff removed the grease blockage and mitigated the manhole overflow. Trucks vacuumed and removed water mix out of detention pond and catch basin.

Spill notifications were placed at the spill site, behind 10530 Abercorn St. and at Wilshire Canal / White Bluff Road. All agencies were notified as required by state guidelines.

City of Savannah crews responded to a second minor sewage spill at 2:30 p.m. January 31, at 408 Montclair Blvd. An estimated 760 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 5:02 p.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to a break in the eight inch gravity sewer main. The City’s sewer maintenance staff contained contaminated storm / sewer mix by damming up the canal with sand bags downstream from the spill site and set by-pass pumps to pump to a City Sanitary Sewer Lift Station. Sewer Maintenance Staff used City Vacuum Trucks to pump contaminated waters from the canal.

Spill notifications were placed at the spill site, 408 Montclair Blvd., at Wilshire Canal / Abercorn Street and Wilshire Canal / White Bluff Road. All agencies were notified as required by state guidelines.
