City Crews Respond to Minor Sewage Spill

SAVANNAH, GA (December 10, 2018) — City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 7:40 a.m. December 10, at 601 Penn Waller Rd. An estimated 2,240 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 9:32 a.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to a gravity sewer main stoppage caused by grease. The City’s sewer maintenance staff cleared the stoppage then cleaned and mitigated the site by the placement of lime on impacted areas.

The City’s Grease Abatement team will investigate and address potential grease sources upstream from the mishap. In addition, a manhole level alarm will be installed to receive timely notice to avoid future overflows.

Spill notifications were placed at the spill site, and the Betz Creek Canal Crossings at Penn Waller Road and Walthour Road. All agencies were notified as required by state
