Alderman Van Johnson to Serve as NLC Advisory Council Chairman

SAVANNAH, GA (December 6, 2018) —City of Savannah Alderman Van Johnson has been appointed to serve as Chairman of the NLC Advisory Board for the 2019 calendar year by National League of Cities' (NLC) President, Karen Freeman-Wilson, Mayor of Gary, Indiana.

The Advisory Council is made up of past board members who are still in elected local office who provide advice and input to the President and Board of Directors.

Alderman Johnson most recently served as Vice Chair of the Advisory Council and completed a four-year elected term on the NLC Board of Directors, being only the fourth Savannahian in NLC's 94 year history to do so. He has also served as Chairman & Vice Chairman of the Human Development Steering Committee and serves a member of the Institute for Youth, Education and Families.

"I am blessed to continue this level of national leadership while representing Savannah, said Johnson. "This appointment ensures that Savannah remains at the table and helps drive federal advocacy efforts with the Trump Administration and Congress."

"We are pleased that Alderman Johnson has again accepted a national leadership role with NLC,” said Clarence Anthony, Executive Director of NLC. "His experience locally in Savannah and on the national level will be valuable to us as we face challenges and opportunities ahead."

Alderman Johnson will serve with Vice Chair, Alderman Joe Moore from Chicago, IL and Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson from Columbus, OH.
