Forsyth Park, Bonaventure Cemetery Win TripSavvy Editors’ Choice Awards

SAVANNAH, GA (October 25, 2018) — Two City of Savannah parks have been named winners in the inaugural TripSavvy Editors’ Choice Awards in the 2018 Parks and Gardens category. Forsyth Park received a Best Urban Park award and Bonaventure Cemetery was a winner under the Parks & Gardens category.

Spanning more than 30 acres, Forsyth Park is Savannah’s oldest public park. The land for the park was donated by William Brown Hodgson in the 1840s, and named for illustrious statesman and thirty-third Georgia governor John Forsyth, who also represented Georgia in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as serving as Secretary of State under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. The park’s iconic fountain was installed in 1858 and is today one of the most-photographed places in Savannah.

Bonaventure Cemetery is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing over 100 acres. The site, located along the bluff of the Wilmington River, was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. This charming cemetery has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people.
