SAVANNAH, GA (October 4, 2018) — The City of Savannah’s landscape-clearing goats are back. After a brief hiatus, they are now located at the Clinch Street Pond behind DeRenne Middle School.
The new herd consists of 31 goats and two guardian dogs Bella and Walker, which are Great Pyrenees. This herd will be transported to and from Clinch Street Pond each day. They will not remain on site overnight. Previously goats were used to clear vegetation at Laurel Grove North Cemetery and the Mohawk Lake Park.
The goats are benefiting the City in several ways. Goats are able to clear vegetation in areas that are difficult for workers to clear or to access with machinery. Goats thrive on poison ivy, poison oak, Kudzu, blackberries, nasty vines, and briers. Second, the City also expects to see a cost-savings using the goats instead of City staff. Third, the use of goats to remove vegetation is more gentle on the environment than using herbicides or large machinery.
