[ARCHIVED] City Announces Town Hall Meetings for Arena and SPLOST 7

splostmeetingSAVANNAH, GA (October 4, 2018) —The City of Savannah has scheduled a series of town hall meetings in each aldermanic district to promote discussions about the new Savannah Arena Project and SPLOST 7.

The meetings will be held throughout the month, beginning next Wednesday, October 10. Each meeting will last approximately 90 minutes. The focus is to obtain public feedback to help “shape” the new arena and to discuss what type of projects citizens would like to see funded if SPLOST 7 is approved by voters next year.

Currently the Savannah Arena project is in the design phase. Since August, the City has been soliciting input through an on-line survey found at http://savannahga.gov/arena and holding community meetings. Designers from Perkins + Will want to know what is most important to people when they attend events in the future arena—comfortable seating, family-friendly areas, food and beverage choices, transportation to the arena, etc. The input will allow the designers to create three initial exterior designs of the arenas and designs of the interior space. These designs will be unveiled at a city-wide public meeting on Tuesday, October 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the Civic Center ballroom. Again, the public will have the chance to weigh-in on the design concepts.

The Arena is being paid for by funds raised by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax or SPLOST. The next SPLOST referendum to fund capital projects in Chatham County will be on the ballot in November 2019. In preparation, the City will be talking to residents at the town hall meetings to find out what new projects they would like to see on the list for SPLOST 7, such as new recreational centers, drainage projects, public safety facilities, neighborhood enhancements, infrastructure improvements, etc.
