Historic City Maps Now Available Online

SAVANNAH, GA (August 27, 2018) — The City of Savannah has digitalized over 460 historical maps from the City’s municipal archives thanks to a grant provided by the Digital Library of Georgia.

Residents can visit www.savannahga.gov/DigitalCollections to view collections of historical maps that document the development of Savannah’s neighborhoods through the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. A highlight of the collection, found in the General Maps section, is a map from 1798 by John McKinnon that documents the extension of the “Oglethorpe Plan” outside of the town limits to encompass the garden and farm lots.

“Online access will surely increase the use of these historic maps and expand our geographical reach to those outside of Savannah who cannot physically come to City Hall,” says Director of Municipal Archives Luciana Spracher. “We hope that greater access to our records, and to a younger audience that may not access them through traditional onsite visits, will encourage new interactions with archives and new innovative projects.”
