City Installs Cigarette Receptacles on River Street

SAVANNAH, GA (June 19, 2018) — The City of Savannah has installed new cigarette receptacles along River Street to bring awareness to cigarette litter through the initiative “Georgia’s Coast is Not an Ashtray”

The receptacles are located along the north side of River Street across from Kevin Barry’s, Wet Willies, and the Warehouse.

The goal of the educational campaign is to bring awareness to the nation’s number one most littered item, cigarette butts, through a variety of mediums including placing cigarette receptacles near water ways as well as partnering with businesses to distribute signs and drink coasters that market the campaign.

Keep Savannah Beautiful selected River Street as the area of focus where cigarette receptacles and marketing materials will be strategically placed and readily seen by an estimated 180,000 people during the campaign.

“We are excited to come together with great partners across the coastal region to address cigarette litter,” said Sanitation Director Gene Prevatt. “The magnitude of this project has the potential to be huge and we will aim to make a big impact on cigarette litter on Georgia’s coast.”

“Georgia’s Coast is Not an Ashtray” is funded by a $15,000 Keep America Beautiful cigarette litter prevention program grant. For more information on the “Georgia’s Coast is Not an Ashtray” initiative, contact Carliss Bates at the City of Savannah Sanitation Department at 912-651-6579.
