City Crews Respond to Minor Sewage Spill

SAVANNAH, GA (May 16, 2018) — City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 2:17 p.m. May 15, at 23 Wright St. An estimated 3,450 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 2:40 p.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to a manhole failure caused sand and grout that plugged a downstream gravity sewer which flowed into and surcharged the storm system located on Wright St. City of Savannah Sewer Maintenance staff placed earthen berm at the spill site to contain overflow and used City Jet-Vac trucks to pump and remove sanitary sewer / storm water mix from downstream drainage system.

Spill notifications were placed at the spill site, Houlihan Bridge and at Highway 17a/Dundee Canal crossing. All agencies were notified as required by state guidelines.
