Whitaker Street Receives Pedestrian Safety Enhancements
SAVANNAH, GA (April 20, 2018)— At noon today, pedestrians will be able to activate new crosswalk warning lights, called Rapid Flashing Beacons (RFBs), at five intersections on Whitaker Street next to Forsyth Park. The City of Savannah installed the lights earlier this week in an effort to enhance pedestrian safety.
Rapid Flashing Beacons allow the City to install more lights in more locations in ways that are less invasive, easier to maintain, and less disruptive to traffic. Research by the Federal Highway Administration has determined that the RFB system is highly effective in prompting drivers to yield to pedestrians.
The new RFB crosswalks have been installed at the following intersections on Whitaker Street:
- Huntingdon Street
- Hall Street
- Bolton Street
- Gwinnett Street
- Park Avenue
These lights are in addition to the RFBs that were installed at three intersections next to the park on Drayton Street in 2017.
