Mayor To Help Tear Down Blighted Home

SAVANNAH, GA (April 9, 2018) — City of Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach will take the first swipe in tearing down a blighted home in the Edgemere-Sackville neighborhood as part of the City’s Savannah Shines neighborhood revitalization program.

The house, located on East 55th Street, is being demolished on Wednesday, April 11 at 9 a.m. to make way for a new Habitat for Humanity home that will be purchased by a first-time home buyer.

What: Savannah Shines House Demolition and Partnership Celebration

When: Wednesday, April 11, 9 a.m.

Where: 1116 East 55th Street

Who: Mayor Eddie DeLoach, District 3 Alderman John Hall, City Staff

The Savannah Shines initiative grew out of the City Council’s interest to focus public and private resources to make noticeable improvement in a neighborhood over an 18 to 24 month period.

The Edgemere-Sackville was selected as Savannah Shines first pilot neighborhood in August 2017. Since then, the Savannah Shines Initiative has coordinated the partnership of City departments and private resources to improve housing and property conditions, eliminate blight and enhance public spaces in the Edgemere-Sackville neighborhood.

Neighborhood Revitalization is one of the five priorities City Council established in the Savannah Forward Strategic Plan.
