[ARCHIVED] City crews respond to sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: February 15, 2017

City of Savannah crews responded to a sewage spill at the intersection of York Lane and East Broad Street, at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. The spill occurred when a 20” force main broke following construction work and testing on the main downstream. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 44,099 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a major spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was corrected by 9:34 a.m. The flow was re-routed to discharge into another location of the gravity sanitary sewer system. A by-pass pump has been deployed to mitigate and contain the impact of the spill. Repairs will be made to the force main failure and crews will replace the damaged section of force main pipe. Spill notification markers were placed at the spill site to the Savannah River, near City LS 143 north of Harbor Street and at East Coast Terminals. All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
