[ARCHIVED] City crews respond to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: January 13, 2017

City of Savannah Water Resources crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 9:15 a.m. Friday January 13, 2017, at 709 Mall Blvd. An estimated 2,000 gallons spilled before the leak was corrected at 9:35 a.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was caused by the failure of by-pass pumps during the repair of a sewer main which sustained damage during Hurricane Matthew. Crews restored pump service and contained the water in a ditch and set up the by-pass pumps which pumped the contaminated water back into the sanitary sewer system. Spill notification markers were placed at the spill site, 601 Cranman Drive and at 8809 Rivers End Drive. All regulatory authorities were notified. Public notification is required per State guidelines.
