Utility crews are working non-stop to restore electrical services to all areas of the city. But with power still out in many areas, it is important to remember some safety guidelines when using generators at your home or place of business. Fuel powered appliances like generators and heaters emit carbon monoxide (an odorless gas) which can accumulate rapidly in an enclosed area and have deadly results. Never use these devices inside an enclosed area (not even a garage). These appliances are designed to be used outdoors to eliminate the possibility of carbon monoxide accumulations. Place generators on a smooth flat surface a safe distance outside the home or business.
With cooler temperatures at night, it is important to also remember a few basic safety tips for space heater and fireplace use. Never use any type of fuel powered heating device inside a closed structure. Not only are they a fire safety threat, but propane and kerosene powered heaters also emit carbon monoxide. Never use gasoline in any space heater. Fireplaces can be a good source for heat and light but fire safety should be a priority when using them in the aftermath of the storm. Always remember to open the flue prior to using the fireplace. This provides necessary ventilation to eliminate the accumulation of smoke in the home. Never use gas or charcoal grills for heat inside the home. Again, theses appliances emit carbon monoxide and can be deadly used improperly.
