[ARCHIVED] Residents presented with Good Neighbor Award

Three Savannah residents who strive to improve their communities and serve those in need were presented with Good Neighbor Awards today by City Council.

The winners, announced during the regular City Council meeting, were Eugene Wright, Fred Hallaran, and Patricia Lennox Jenkins . The three were recognized publicly and presented with Good Neighbor Award plaques by Mayor Eddie DeLoach and City Council.

About the Good Neighbor Awards recipients:

Eugene Wright
• Block Club President of the Leeds Gates Neighborhood Association.
• Diligent in contacting 311 about hazardous conditions
• Maintains entrance to the neighborhood
• Provides respite care for neighbors, elderly and children in need
• Provides meals for less fortunate residents
• Provides shelter to those who have lost their homes or are in transition
• Served as foster parent
• President of the Leedsgate Neighborhood Association – reviving the once defunct association.
• Attends a variety of meetings including Council meetings and reports back to the Association
• Performs property repairs and cuts lawns for neighbors who are disable or unable to pay for services.

Fred Hallaran
• Married to Connie – together they are very active in caring for animals
• In charge of Charitable Works initiatives of the Victorian Neighborhoods Association (VNA)
• Delivered hundreds of pounds of food and supplies to the Human Society
• Coordinated VNA effort sponsoring two dogs in the Operation Hope project, the project uses jail inmates to train rescued dogs with the hope that they can become service animals
• Coordinated a book drive for the Coastal Corrections Center and County Jail libraries in an effort to increase inmate literacy and perspective on their own lives
• Assists with the Milton Project (capturing, neutering then releasing feral cats.)
• Oversees the well-being of elder couple in neighborhood, sitting with one while the other is freed up to do chores and attend functions.
• Helped construct the VNA Community Garden
• Participates in neighborhood cleanups
• Organized a golfing fundraiser - raising over $2000
Patricia Lennox Jenkins
• Accomplished amazing results on important projects that have impact our Savannah community
• Led a crusade after the Powell Duffryn chemical spill in 1995 documenting the events of the catastrophic event to make sure everyone was taking the issues of safety preparedness and community planning seriously
• Inspires others with her courage and can-do attitude to care enough and make her volunteer priorities their own
• With the help of her neighbors, tackled a hazardous waste clean-up at a local park
• Is often the unnamed driving force behind health fairs, safety initiatives, educational programs and environmental forums
• Researched the history of Pine Gardens and the Southeastern Shipyard in order to get national registry status
• Encourages everyone’s involvement in clean air and water issues

The Good Neighbor Award is a way to recognize citizens who improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods every day through acts large and small.

Good Neighbor Award recipients must be:
• A resident of the City of Savannah
• Have made contributions to their neighborhoods or to Savannah
• Have demonstrated concern for their neighborhood’s well-being or overall quality of life for the City of Savannah
• Not be employed by the City of Savannah
