[ARCHIVED] City crews respond to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: February 13, 2013

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at Stiles Avenue and Murphy Street, Wednesday, February 13. A sewer manhole overflow occurred due to a sewer collection system surcharged when lightning struck a sewer lift station and blew-out and shut down the controls and the station failsafe system. An estimated release of 175 gallons of sewage overflowed into the storm drainage system. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 8:15 a.m. today, and the spill was corrected by 8:50a.m. The Lift Station controls and failsafe system were repaired and station was brought back on line and the collection system was pumped down to allow normal flow.

All agencies required by the State EPD were notified. Spill notification was posted at Stiles/Gwinnett.
