City To Dedicate Evergreen Cemetery
SAVANNAH (Dec. 1, 2023) – The City of Savannah will hold a dedication ceremony for the newly refurbished Evergreen Cemetery featuring local pastors on Dec. 9 at 9:30 a.m.
Rev. Janice Swan-Butts from Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, Elder James E. Taylor, and Bishop Willie Ferrell for The Royal Church of Christ, will lead the ceremony in prayer and reflection. Roses will be available to place gravesites as well. The public is invited to join the ceremony.
The dedication follows a massive refurbishment project helmed by the Cemeteries Division of the Park and Tree Department after the City’s purchase of the cemetery in May of this year. The final purchase was the culmination of a four-year effort by the City to ensure perpetual care of those interred at Evergreen Cemetery.
More than 50 City employees worked to remove 25 tons of debris, including 2.5 acres of bamboo, kudzu, and trash from the property allowing once again for friends and family members of the Savannahians laid to rest in the cemetery to visit. Over 6,000 graves were located during the process. All monuments uncovered were documented and a gravesite database was created.
All activity within the cemetery since the purchase in May will be authorized and managed solely by the City of Savannah. New single space lots will be available for sale by the end of 2024. The City also plans on installing black metal fencing to provide extra safety and security.
