Project Plans
Project DeRenne is currently divided into four projects: three Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) projects and one City of Savannah project.
The Boulevard: 1-516 Eastern Terminus Interchange at DeRenne (GDOT Project Identification (PI) Number 0008358)
The Boulevard consists of a new connection via an interchange with I-516 located just west of Mildred Street and continuing along the alignment of a widened Hampstead Avenue (four-lane divided section with shared-use path) to a realignment of White Bluff Road. The project will include elevation of the eastbound travel lanes over reconfigured access to Hunter Army Airfield and elevation of the westbound travel lanes over I-516/DeRenne Avenue. The project begins approximately 0.9 miles west of the DeRenne Avenue and Montgomery Street intersection and ends approximately 500 feet south of the current intersection of Hampstead Avenue and White Bluff Road. Montgomery Street will be reconstructed from a four-lane divided roadway to a two-lane, median-divided neighborhood street with on-street parking, an 8-foot-wide shared-use path, and a planting strip. The existing intersection of White Bluff Road with Hampstead Avenue will be modified such that the through movement becomes northbound to westbound and eastbound to southbound, with the remaining leg of White Bluff Road (connecting to DeRenne Avenue) teed into the outside of the new curve. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic to and from the Hunter Army Airfield will be accommodated on a shared-use path south of the Hampstead alignment that connects on the east to the intersection with White Bluff Road. Pedestrian enhancements, landscaping, and street lighting will be included at this intersection. Trees used along the corridor will be acceptable GDOT street trees. Utility relocations, other than when a direct conflict exists, are not anticipated within the scope of this project.
West DeRenne Project: SR 21/DeRenne Avenue from Mildred to SR 204 (GDOT PI 0010236)
The West DeRenne Project operates in conjunction with The Boulevard to improve the portion of SR 21 /DeRenne Avenue between Mildred Street and SR 204/ Abercorn Street. Specific improvements include:
- Provide access management by closing existing mid-block median breaks
- Optimize the intersection configurations at Montgomery Street, White Bluff Road and SR 204/ Abercorn Street to reflect the change in travel patterns with the implementation of The Boulevard
- Incorporate enhanced pedestrian accommodations along the corridor
East DeRenne Project: DeRenne Avenue from Abercorn to Truman (GDOT PI 0008359)
The East DeRenne Project improves the segment of DeRenne Avenue between SR 204/Abercorn Street and the Harry S. Truman Parkway. Specific improvements include:
- Provide access management through conversion of the existing two-way left-turn lane to a raised, planted median
- Optimize the configuration of DeRenne Avenue and Waters Avenue intersection to minimize delay through restriping of the existing roadway
- Develop a parallel bicycle facility utilizing DeRenne Drive
- Incorporate enhanced pedestrian accommodations along the corridor
West DeRenne Congestion Relief Project (City-funded)
The City of Savannah is advancing the West DeRenne Congestion Relief Project to address more immediate needs for traffic safety and operational improvements along DeRenne Avenue from Montgomery Street to White Bluff Road.
