The General McIntosh and President Street Improvement
project remains in the surcharge consolidation settlement period. As
planned, this period of time in the project schedule results in the least
amount of observable activity. Although the project doesn’t appear as
active during this period, this is a very critical time of surcharge
monitoring. A determination must be made as to when consolidation
settlement has been obtained. If surcharge is removed too soon, future
significant settlement of the finished roadway and new utility lines may
result. Current monitoring results indicate the consolidation nearing
completion, although additional monitoring over the next month or two may be
necessary to ensure requirements have been met.
While
awaiting consolidation settlement on the new roadway portions of the project,
one crew continues to install new utility lines through the newly bored
casing. These casings are installed underneath the railroad tracks and new
Bilbo Canal on the south side of President Street, just west of the Truman
Parkway. These lines include the 24” Water Main and 24” Sewer Force
Main. These two new utility lines (280’ each) were pressure tested last
week with passing results.
In
addition, the Bridge and Canal crew have finished installation of concrete
canal walls on the south side of President Street and have moved to the north
side of the roadway. They have begun to install the eastern canal
wall. This work involves de-energizing the overhead power lines through
coordination with Georgia Power, driving sheet piles to safely shore the
excavation, driving H-piles (plum and battered piles) for the canal wall
foundation support, forming the canal wall footer, tying rebar, and pouring concrete
for the footer and canal walls.
