Overall activity on the project has slowed some, but
although you don’t see as much heavy equipment up and down the site, after
placement of the surcharge material on the south side of President Street and
along General McIntosh it is now doing the work for us. This material is
consolidating the soft underlying soils to provide a good foundation for
utility line installations and surface roadway improvements. Settlement
plate and inclinometer monitoring continue on a weekly basis to determine when
the consolidation of underlying soils has been accomplished. Significant
settlement was observed in the beginning, but as anticipated, the rate of
settlement has slowed significantly.
Crews
working on the utility line jack and bores underneath the railroad tracks and
future Bilbo Canal have now completed all three bore casing
installations. This crew will now be installing the new water and sewer
mains through the casings and laying new mains adjacent to the bores.
These new water and sewer mains will connect with other newly installed mains
continuing underneath the Truman Parkway and further east. The third
casing, installed for Atlanta Gas and Light’s 12” gas main, will now require
installation through the casing to relocate the existing gas main outside of project
conflicts.
Construction continues on the new reinforced concrete Bilbo
Canal walls. The eastern inner Bilbo Canal reinforced concrete wall on
the south side of President Street has been completed. This crew is
now working of a final portion of the western inner Bilbo Canal reinforced
concrete wall on the south side of President Street. In the next two or
three weeks, this crew will have the inner canal walls on the south side of
President Street complete, and will mobilize a crane to begin construction of
the inner canal walls located on the north side of President Street.
A utility crew working on the far eastern end of the project
(near Truman Parkway) has completed a new section of 24” water main and is
close to completing an equal length of new 24” sewer force main. This
crew will soon be moving to the median of President Street (just east of the
Truman Parkway over pass) to construct the required water main
connection. This construction in the median will require the connection of
a new 24” water main to an existing 20” water main running along the median of
President Street.
