The Real Estate Services Department issues permits for businesses who wish to use a chalk menu board for advertisement.

Overview

The City of Savannah recognizes that Menu Boards, also known as 'A-Frame' or 'Sandwich' boards, significantly benefit local businesses by providing a convenient option to creatively advertise to patrons. Menu boards must remain consistent with local design standards, cannot be placed in the street, and shall not obstruct the public right-of-way. 


Program Guidelines

Menu Boards are regulated through the current Temporary Use of the Public Right-of-Way policy.  Applicants shall obtain permits annually from the Real Estate Services Department.  Menu Board permits expire on March 31st of each year. 

Menu Board Standards:

  • Only one menu board per business allowed
  • Must be durable enough to withstand both weather and sidewalk conditions
  • Writing area must be chalkboard with only chalk writing elements
  • Must meet all property signage requirements under current zoning ordinances
  • No posters or print materials
  • No lighting mechanisms or attachments
  • Business logo is permitted on the framework, commercial/product logos are not
  • Must be placed within 18 inches of the business property line
  • Shall not exceed 24 inches in width and 43 inches in height

Menu Board Permit Fees

  • Permit: $200.00 (annually)
