Gwinnett Street Streetscape Improvement Project

GwinnettMap Opens in new window

To support the development of the Savannah Arena, the City of Savannah will be improving Gwinnett Street.

On March 12, City Council approved a construction and beautification contract for the Gwinnett Street Widening Project to Preferred Materials, Inc. in the amount of $13,662,942. Improvements will include widening the existing two-lane roadway to a four-lane roadway with sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and a landscaped median. Widening of a section of the Springfield Canal will coincide with the construction of a new bridge to raise the existing roadway elevations.

The project is estimated to last 24 months with Gwinnett Street being closed for the duration of construction project. The current schedule is:

  • May 25: Utility relocation underway. No street closures.
  • June 8: West Gwinnett Street will be closed to vehicular thru traffic between Stiles Avenue and I-16 overpass to allow for road construction to start. Pedestrians can continue to use the walking path on West Gwinnett Street through the construction site until June 22 when the road will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  • June 22: Gwinnett Street will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Stiles Avenue and I-16 overpass.

During the Gwinnett Street closure, Stiles Avenue will remain open as part of the detour.
