- Registering for Business Taxes
As a new business owner, you will need to determine the federal, state, and local tax obligations required to start and maintain your business type and to register appropriately.
You can obtain your Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The EIN is used by the federal government to identify the tax accounts of employers.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulates the tax responsibilities for your business’ employees. Before hiring employees for your business, be sure to review IRS regulations.
You can obtain your State of Georgia Tax Identification Number by contacting the Georgia Department of Revenue. The Georgia Department of Revenue regulates state taxes and establishes your business tax credits and liabilities.

The City of Savannah Revenue Ordinance (Article Y) requires operating businesses to have a “business tax certificate.” To obtain your business tax certificate, businesses should submit a completed Business Tax Application to the City of Savannah Revenue Department. Upon receipt of all required documentation, the Revenue Department will issue the business tax certificate.
