The Code Compliance Department helps protect the health, safety, and appearance of Savannah’s neighborhoods by administering and enforcing a wide range of local ordinances. These ordinances address property maintenance, zoning, residential parking, sanitation, short-term vacation rentals, and Special Events and Tourism-related permits, all of which play an important role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming city for residents and visitors alike.
The Department routinely responds to concerns such as overgrown lots, debris, derelict or abandoned vehicles, unsafe structures, and unsecured residential properties. In each case, the goal is to address conditions that may pose risks to public safety or negatively impact surrounding neighborhoods.
Code Compliance emphasizes education and voluntary compliance whenever possible. Code Officers work directly with property owners, tenants, and responsible parties to explain applicable requirements and provide time to correct violations. When voluntary compliance cannot be achieved, cases may be referred to the Recorder’s Court of Chatham County in accordance with local ordinances.
In some situations, the Department may coordinate contracted services to address immediate safety concerns, such as securing vacant properties, demolishing structurally unsound buildings, removing hazardous trees from vacant lots, or maintaining overgrown properties. Costs associated with these services are billed to the property owner and, if unpaid, may result in a lien on the property, as allowed by law.
In addition to enforcement, Code Compliance is committed to public education and outreach. The Department engages with residents, businesses, and community groups through one-on-one assistance, presentations, and public forums to help foster understanding of local ordinances and support long-term compliance across the city.
