Life Event - Request Benefit Changes

Making Changes to Your Benefits

After your initial benefit elections, you may only change your benefit elections during the Open Enrollment period, unless you experience a qualifying life event:

  • Change of legal marital status (i.e. marriage, divorce, or death of a spouse)
  • Change in number of dependents (i.e. birth, adoption, death of dependent, ineligibility due to age)
  • Change in employment or job status (spouse loses job, etc.)
  • Loss or gain in coverage from a State/Federal Funded Program

You must make the changes to your benefits within 30 days of the event date for changes in marital status, change in number of dependents, or change in employment or job status.  *You have 60 days to make changes to your benefits for a loss or gain of coverage from a State or Federal funded program.

Notify the Benefit’s Department as soon as a divorce is finalized.  Ex-Spouses or former stepchildren are not eligible to remain on the City of Savannah insurance. You will be responsible for the costs for all claims, fees, and costs associated with having an ineligible member on the plan after the divorce is finalized.

Documentation is required to verify your life event. Failure to request a change of status within 30 days of the event will result in you having to wait until the next open enrollment period, November 1st-15th to make changes to your benefit plans with exception to divorces or death of a dependent.

If you experience a qualifying life event, please complete all four pages of the Life Event Enrollment Packet and send to Krystal Karban, Benefits Technician, via Email, Fax 912.525.1528 or HR Benefits Office located at 5515 Abercorn Street.
