Two Displaced by West 73rd Street Fire
SAVANNAH, GA (Wednesday, February 3, 2021) – The Savannah Fire Department responded to a fire in the 200 Block of West 73rd Street at 5:42 a.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2021. Engine 1 was first on scene. Firefighters discovered heavy smoke and flames streaming from the front bedroom of a single story home. They quickly extinguished the fire. The residents safely escaped on their own. No one was physically injured, but two people were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Heating, holiday decorations, winter storms and candles increase the risk of fire during the winter months. Remember:
- Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from space heaters, candles, fire places, radiators or any heat source
- Plug only one heat-producing appliance - like space heaters, hot plates or coffee makers – into an electrical outlet at a time. Do not use them with extension cords
- Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them once a month
- Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents annually
- Only use extension cords temporarily
- Never run extension cords under rugs or furniture
- Never use an oven or stovetop burners to heat your home
- Extinguish candles and turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to bed
