Fire sends hotel up in flames

SAVANNAH – On March 26, at approximately 2:45 p.m., the Savannah Fire Department (SFD) responded to the intersection of Abercorn St. and Mercy Blvd. for a structure fire. Approximately 70 people were displaced with the assistance of the Red Cross. There have been no reported injuries.

SFD arrived on scene of the Red Roof Inn located in the 1100 block of Abercorn St. in under four minutes. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames visible. Upon arrival, the building was evacuated. SFD completed a secondary search to confirm all clear.

Despite the wind playing a factor in the spread of the fire, firefighters successfully contained the fire around 5:15 p.m. The cause of the fire is ruled an accident due to on-site welding construction.
