City issues Boil Water Advisory for Dutch Island water customers

Update: The boil water advisory for customers on Dutch Island has been lifted as of 9:30 a.m. following satisfactory test results of water supply samples. All customers may resume normal water usage.

SAVANNAH (March 21) - The City of Savannah is issuing a boil water advisory for the customers of Dutch Island due to a brief drop in water pressure in that water system. This advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution, as the City is currently testing that system’s water for microbial contamination and will have verified results by midday tomorrow, March 22. 

To protect the public from any potential health hazard until the water is thoroughly tested, customers of Dutch Island are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, or preparing food. This boil water advisory only impacts the customers of Dutch Island. The advisory is in effect until the City of Savannah has completed appropriate testing to be confident that there is no public health concern for Dutch Island customers. 

To properly boil tap water for use, Dutch Island water customers should: 

• Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container; 
• Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil; 
• Remove the water from the heat source and allow to cool before use. 

During a Boil Water Advisory, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled tap water or bottled water be used for following: 

·         Drinking 

·         Brushing teeth 

·         Washing food and preparing food and baby formula 

·         Making ice 

·         Drinking water for pets
