 City Offices to Close in Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

MLK Parade Road Closures Begin at 5 a.m. on Monday

 

SAVANNAH – City of Savannah administrative offices and facilities will be closed and Monday, Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Emergency services will remain open.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade will take place in the Downtown Historic District beginning at 10 a.m. on Jan. 20. Street closures in the stage area at the intersection of E. Broad and Liberty St. will start at 5 a.m.

Along the route, E. Broad St. between Gwinnet and Broughton will close at 10 a.m. and reopen at 3 p.m. Broughton Street between E. Broad and MLK Jr. Blvd. will close 10 a.m. and reopen at 4:35 p.m. MLK Jr. Blvd. between Broughton St. and Anderson St. will close 10 a.m. and reopen at 3 p.m. 

No parking signs will be posted in advance of the parade. Vehicles remaining along the parade route and in the staging/disbanding areas will be towed at the owner’s expense. The no park zone along the route will be enforced beginning at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 20. Residents are encouraged to visit mlkingsavannah.com for more information and the full parade route. 

Sanitation services will be impacted by the holiday closure. Residents can expect the following changes to their schedule:

Residential garbage collection and yard waste collection services will not run on Monday, Jan. 20. Collection services will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 21, on a one-day delayed schedule.

Recycling services will not run on Monday, Jan. 20. Recycling services will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 21 running Monday’s route. Collections will proceed on a one-day delayed schedule for the remainder of the week.

The Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station will both be closed on Monday, Jan. 20. Dean Forest Landfill will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 21 on a regular schedule. Bacon Park Transfer Station, which is always closed on Monday and Tuesday, will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Street sweeping services will not run on Monday, Jan. 20. Regular sweeping schedule will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Residents are encouraged to consult the sanitation schedule packets disseminated each year and make note of what day sanitation collection will happen on their route. You can find the schedule at savannahga.gov/sanitation.
