TRAFFIC ALERT: East Gwinnett Street Underpass at Broad Closed

City of Savannah Marketing and Communications Posted on October 10, 2024 | Last Updated on November 25, 2024

UPDATE (Nov. 22, 2024): The investigation conducted by City staff in October revealed that an existing, large-diameter water main had a leak, and a segment needed to be completely replaced to ensure continued water service to the surrounding area and protect Gwinnett Street and the underpass. Staff immediately activated a contractor to begin the process of replacing a section of the existing water main.

The new water line will be capable of maintaining an adequate water supply with increased reliability and resiliency for existing and future structures in the surrounding neighborhood.

A section of the existing water main has been replaced with a new 16-inch water main. The next step is to connect the newly installed water line to the existing water line at E. Broad, Additionally, two stormwater drainage inlets are being replaced in the area to increase the capacity of existing drainage system and reduce future roadway flooding at the underpass.

Once work on the stormwater infrastructure is completed, the newly installed water main will be pressure tested, followed by water quality testing before being placed into service.  After the necessary tests are completed, the City street will be resurfaced and re-opened.

Staff estimates this work will take four to six weeks to complete barring any unforeseen delays or inclement weather.
