Monthly Cleaning: Both Bridges on Hwy 17, coming in from SC were a joy to drive on this morning. Thank You to whomever was responsible! It is dangerous enough but, the added obsticles of blocks, vehicle body parts and timber are too much. It's sad to think that the only way it got cleaned is because of the Bridge Run tomorrow, but whatever it takes. It would be so great if Georgia's DOT would do an imminent domain in Jasper County and just fix both the Back River Bridge and Hwy 17. Thank You for the cleaning last night!

My "great idea" would be to more clearly mark areas that are considered "No Parking" zones in the River St. area.
Yes, during a recent visit I received a parking citation while parking among 20 more vehicles in an area listed on the citation as "00 East Broad Ramp".
While I admit I did in fact park in that area, I did not see a "No Parking" sign posted anywhere close. I attempted to contact the City of Savannah Mobility & Parking Services Dept. today (2/18 President's Day, yes they were closed for the holiday) and went to their automated attendant that does not accept voicemails.
Then, I contacted a nice lady in the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department who readily admitted the area was not clearly marked as a "No Parking" zone, and that I would need to contact the Mobility and Parking Services Dept. at a later date to discuss.
Fortunately it's only a $15 citation that will not "break the bank". But it will have second thoughts before visiting Savannah again.

I am overwhelmed at the vast number of people I see driving and not using their turn signal and creating a public hazard. These laws do not seem to be enforced and in fact I have seen officers not using their blinkers. Is this not a state law to use turn signals when turning in any circumstance? Why is this law not enforced? ONLY when this law is enforced will these hazardous and negligent individuals stop breaking this law. Let's do the right thing and start an initiative to begin enforcing a law that when not used properly places other drivers at risk. We seem to enforce a seat belt law with greater concern that this and that in my opinion is just plain wrong!

Biking often cycle through stop signs & almost never use hand signals. They should have to abide by traffic laws. Consequently, bicycle registrations, along with classes would helpful.

I believe it is mostly just ignorance, so a warning from an officer might be all it takes to correct people riding the wrong way down 1 way streets, riding on the wrong side of the road or on sidewalks. I see people putting themselves in danger every day! I've seen officers informing people of the pedestrian zone in Forsyth Park. Just one day spent on Price and Lincoln stopping people from going the wrong way in the bicycle lane would help prevent an unnecessary death. Please protect us!

The City of Savannah is in the early stages of drafting a proposed ordinance to regulate motorized carts and low speed vehicles on public streets.
We are seeking input from residents, both in-person, at two upcoming public meetings, and here online in Community Voice. The feedback received through this process will be reviewed by the Tourism Advisory Committee to assist in the development of the ordinance which will be presented to City Council for formal consideration.
The meetings will be held at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm Street at 6 p.m. on November 6 and November 20.

The lights need to be fixed and working on the Exit 164A from I-16 to I-516 and lights need to be added on both sides along Veterans Parkway from I-516 to 204/Abercorn. It is very dangerous along these routes at night and often the only way to see is with high beams which is not at all courteous or safe for the drivers approaching for the opposite direction. This really needs to be addressed. The roads don't have the proper amount of reflective paint on them either. There would be less accidents if the drivers could see the roads properly.

While discussing the recent rash of shootings with some relatives on Long Island, they mentioned that a system was in place to detect and pinpoint gunshots, and that gunfire was extremely rare since it had been installed. Some quick internet searching turned up ShotSpotter:
http://www.shotspotter.com/
Inconspicuous microphones are placed throughout the city, and attached to a computer running software designed to recognize and triangulate the sound of gunshots to within a few dozen feet. Other cities, like Trenton, NJ and South Bend, IN have apparently used federal grant money to offset the cost of installing the system.
I believe this idea is worth a serious look from city leadership, and for me, the sooner, the better. I have dug pistol slugs out of my Eastside home on two separate occasions this year, and I will not tolerate a third.

On Eisenhower, from Skidaway Road to Waters, there is a sidewalk on only one side and after crossing Waters Avenue, there is no sidewalk on either side. DeRenne Avenue, Abercorn Street, White Bluff Road, Victory Drive, Skidaway Road, Hodgeson Memorial and other busy roads also only have a sidewalk on one side along only parts of the roads. This is a problem when someone lives on the side of the road where there is no sidewalk and needs to walk to a place on the same side of the road, but does not want to get their shoes wet and muddy. Savannah needs continuous sidewalks on both sides of all busy roads, like other cities.

I'm concerned the new expansion of route 204 does not contemplate a plan for people riding bicycles. Currently there is no way to go from Georgetown to Savannah Mall, or Hwy 17 with 204 to Abercorn Ave on a bicycle or walking. Hwy 204 could easily be improved to accommodate bicycles, just like Hwy 17 does. The only concern is with the exit to take Vet's Parkway, but with a small bike path under the ramps, walkers & cyclist can commute without risking their lives or a fine. Forcing everyone to ride on a motorized vehicle is a very selfish and discriminatory policy.
The bike lanes on Hwy 17 and Route 80 are not painted in some areas, especially as they get closer to the urban center; which is precisely where they are needed the most.
Riding to Wilmington Island can be pretty scary, until you get to the other side of the bridge. Chatham Parkway and Stanley Ave. is really narrow and can't hardly fit two cars and a bike at the same time

The parents of Savannah would love to know if/when the gate at the forsyth playground will be fixed. Children are constantly escaping.

I have recently moved to the area and I have a son going to college here at a campus where there was a recent shooting. I am generally concerned for the well being of this city and it was not what I expected when we moved here. What is being done to slow down this curbside violence? Has the powers at be thought of using some tactics they used in the 90's during the uptick in the same type of violence in larger cities like Boston and New York? What kind of outreach is being done? Are the churches involved ministering to those in jail and juvenile hall? Have additional beat cops been added to bad areas? What about the guardian angels? Is there a group going here in Savannah? http://www.guardianangels.org/ This helped tremendously in the Boston area. What is happening is bad and its going to change your visitor economy. Something needs to be done and done now! Swift action!
