EPA Brownfields Assessment grant
In 2022, the City of Savannah was awarded a Brownfields Assessment grant from the EPA to assess and plan for the clean-up and reuse of brownfields.
A brownfield is a property whose expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence, or perceived presence, of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. These sites may have been in use in the past but are now underutilized or abandoned due to concerns of contamination. Examples of such sites include gas stations, dry cleaners, mechanic shops, aging strip malls/warehouses, industrial sites, etc.
Through the funding from the Brownfields Assessment grant, properties that have, or may be perceived to have environmental impacts can be assessed at no cost for Phase I and Phase II environmental sites assessments (ESAs). The funding can also be used to conduct building materials surveys and develop site clean-up and reuse plans that support sale or redevelopment activities for eligible sites.
The Brownfield Advisory Board has worked with the City to identify brownfields and conduct outreach to landowners that may be interested in utilizing this funding. Residents are also able to nominate sites that they think may be eligible by filling out a form on the Office of Sustainability’s website, or by contacting the Project Manager, Avni Naik, at avni.naik@savannahga.gov.
